The idea of explaining to him about us being mates and him rejecting me is terrifying. I would love to tell him that we're soulmates. That we're meant to be. But I am afraid of his reaction. I'm afraid he might deny me and would want someone else. I wouldn't be able to live with myself."Reign? Are you... okay?" Kyle asked when I didn't answer his question.
I cleared my throat and shook my head to clear my mind before answering. "Yes. I'm okay."
"Well?" He asked cautiously.
I took a deep breath because I feel an oncoming suffocation at the possible outcomes of this conversation. "Mates. Mates are... Well, soulmates. The other half. The Eve of the Adam," I said quite unclearly.
"I... I don't quite get it."
"Mates are bonded for life after their marking, which is done when they're having sex or after," I blushed at what I said. "It's really complicated and interesting at the same time. It is hard to explain especially since you're human and you don't exactly feel the need to be with your werewolf mate. Yes, werewolves can and may mate with humans. Although it is rare. Like Mr. Carter, he's a werewolf. But Mrs. Carter is a human. But a werewolf cub conceived by a mated human and werewolf would take over the werewolf genes. That's why Lucas is a werewolf. Anyway, marking is like a symbol that they're mated. Like marriage for humans. Wedding rings to be precise, only it is worn on the neck. Werewolves find their mate because they smell a certain alluring scent from their mate."
With this thought I remembered the night I smelled Kyle's scent. It was so alluring that I couldn't help myself but kiss him.
"Werewolves feel possessiveness over their mate. And when they're mated, they wouldn't be able to feel any attractivess to other werewolves except for their mate."
I took a long breath after finishing my story. I feel as though I told him everything but it's still not enough.
Kyle swallowed before answering. "That's amazing."
I looked at him in surprise. I wasn't expecting his reaction. In all actuality, I was expecting worse.
"What?"
"I don't know. It just amazes me how... werewolves can be committed to one person for life. Don't you think so too?"
I don't know, Kyle. Because with the way you reacted to and viewed everything I just said, you amaze me even more.
"Yeah. I guess it is."
"So... Am I your mate?" He asked me directly. "I mean... I'm not assuming or anything but... that guy said I'm your mate and... I don't know."
My heart pounded in my chest and I felt like it's gonna jump out anytime soon. Not to mention my wolf getting frustrated at the lack of contact with its mate.
I closed my eyes to try to control my heart. I won't be able to speak and think properly with it hammering its way out.
I almost jump out of my skin when I felt his hand touch mine. I was so busy controlling my heart that I didn't notice the rustles he made while moving.
My eyes stayed close as I tighten my hold of his hand. I felt my wolf purr with satisfaction.
I heard his ragged breathing as he moves some more. Soon after I felt his hot breath fanning my face. His hold of my hand tightened even more and I heard his heart beat loudly, almost as loud as mine.
"Reign?" He asked and I have to push my wolf down because it almost made its way out.
Slowly, I opened my eyes to look at him and his green eyes are like piercing through my soul.
His adam's apple moving up and down caught my attention as he swallowed.
"Reign? Am I your mate?" He said, almost in a whisper.
Afraid of what would my voice sound, I simply nodded at him. It's terrifying to know that he might reject me now that he knows.
To my huge surprise, his lips turned upwards and smiled at me warmly. "I'm glad."
"Y-You're not scared?" I almost winced at the stuttering of my voice.
His mouth opened and closed, as if contemplating well on his answer. "Not really. I mean... No. I'm not. And I don't know why. Because I should be. I should be afraid of you because you're... a werewolf! But... Honestly? I'm not. I feel... great!"
A giggle is bubbling up inside me and I have to force myself not to release it.
He's not afraid of me!
I guess I couldn't really help but show my happiness as I felt a grin stretch my face. "That's good."
He nodded and his smile grew wider. "Yeah."
His grin slowly turned down and his face resembled seriousness. "Do you... eat... um..."
Without finishing his sentence, I already know what he means. Although he appears okay with me being a werewolf, I know that he's still afraid of what I might and can do.
"No. We don't eat humans, Kyle. We also live like the rest of you. We also eat the food you eat. Though we hunt, we only do that to sharpen our skills. I mean, we are werewolves. We have the skills we should embrace and master. It would be a waste if we wouldn't, don't you think?" I explained. "But we don't hurt humans. Unless we have to, of course. Like when we have to defend ourselves. No matter how close we can be to humans, blood is still thicker than water, Kyle. We should protect our own race."
He looked like he's in deep thought. After a moment, he answered, "I understand. I just wanted to know if I'm really safe, Reign. You can't blame me, can you?"
"No, I can't. I know, Kyle. But you have to know, I would not hurt you even if it kills me. Even if you ask me to, I wouldn't. Remember that," I told him softly.
He nodded his head and I felt his own forehead against mine.
We stayed like that for a couple of minutes. With our eyes closed, our hands entangled, our breaths mixed, and our foreheads against each other, we savored the peaceful mood that enveloped us. I can hear his heartbeat beating as loud and as fast as mine does.
"I'm glad I'm your mate," Kyle said and it melted my heart.
