Yes, at first he was, but then something that doesn't happen in Twilight books happened, a character development. He chances trough the books. He forms a bond with the others and has his own quests, witch are important to plot.
Bella stays same trough all the books. *Oh, Edward, he's so amazing. I wanna be a vampire to be with him forever. Oh, he left me, I'll become numb and not care about anything anymore.*
