Scott woke up to his mother shaking him. It's time to get up. It's almost 7. His mother signed before leaving the room.
Scott sat up rubbing his eyes as if that would help him wake up better. He got up sleepily and stumbled around his room getting dressed for his first day at the new school.
He got ready quickly and went down stairs. His mom waved her hands before throwing him his lunch. He caught it and signed a quick thank you.
Hey mom? He signed waving to get her attention again. She nodded and looked at him.
Do they know I'm deaf? Like did you put it in the system so that my teachers know? He asked and she nodded.
Yes, they all know. She assured him before pulling him into a big hug. She hummed so that Scott could feel the vibrations.
He pulled away with a large smile. Thank you Mom, I love you.
I love you too! Have a great first day! She signed enthusiastically making him chuckle before he turned to leave.
He put his helmet on quickly and hopped onto his motorcycle. He rode swiftly to the new school and parked in hopefully the right lot for his grade.
He walked into the office and dreaded the moment that he had to get someone's attention but luckily the women behind the front desk looked directly at him and spoke slow enough for him to make out what she was saying.
"You must be Scott, correct?" She asked and he nodded. "Perfect. I'll get you your schedule." She said and he smiled a little bit relieved.
She turned a little and started to talk to a young girl about my age who had just walked in behind me. Scott couldn't quite make out what she was saying because he couldn't read her lips but soon the women turned to look at him again.
"This is Kirstie she's going to show you to all your classes, since you have very similar schedules." She said and Scott nodded before looking at the short blond in front of him. She said something quickly with a big smile on he face but Scott couldn't keep up with the words.
He put up one finger to tell her to wait a second before he reached in his backpack to grab a pen and paper.
Sorry, I'm deaf. I can read your lips if you talk slower.
She read it quickly before laughing. Sorry about that! I get excited sometimes. My name is Kirstie, it's nice to meet you. She signed surprising Scott.
Im Scott, it's nice to meet you too. You know ASL? He asked and she nodded.
My brother's deaf so I learned it for him. She smiled before nodding her head to the door.
Come on, I'll show you to your first class. We have the same. She said grabbing his hand leading him to his first class.
The day went by smoothly. His teachers accommodated for his deafness and gave him sheets with all the information on it in case he missed something. It was also helpful that Kirstie was there next to him to sign something to him in case he missed something.
It was a pretty easy day since all it was was syllabi and learning all the rules. When lunch came around he was thankful when Kirstie invited him to sit with her at lunch.
They approached a table and Kirstie introduced him to all of her friends. There was a guy with long hair and a thick beard that at first looked intimidating but his genuine smile relaxed Scott a little.
