"Hey honey, how was school?" I heard a woman's voice ask but it felt like the voice was far away. My eyes were shut and it seemed like it was just too much work to open them, so I didn't try. Instead I simply tried to listen to conversation around me.

"Fine. How is he?" I heard a familiar male's voice but I could quite pinpoint who the voice belonged to.

"He's fine. Just a broken rib. He should be waking up soon. They put him to sleep because the pain was too much for him but now they have him on some less medication for the pain." The woman told him.

        Were they talking about me?

"Mom? Did you call his mom?" The boy asked with a slightly nervous tone.

"Yes. They got her number on his phone." She informed him.

Now I really hope they aren't talking about me.

"Mom..." his voice was hesitant, "I don't think that was a good idea."

"What do you mean, sweetie?" She asked and I waited for him to answer expectantly.

"I... I think he was lying. Yesterday after school he was still waiting after my practice and I asked if he needed a ride home but he told me his mom was coming to get him."

Fuck. They were talking about me. And "they" must have been Scott and his mom.

I started to try opening my eyes then but it wasn't working. "Maybe she left last night before she went on the trip?" She suggested and I hoped Scott would go with that and not add anything else.

"But then this guy picked him up and he was yelling at him and calling him bad things. And... he... Mitch seemed terrified but he left anyway. The same night he 'fell' down the stairs." He explained and my heart started to race.

I started to hear my heart monitor beep faster before I finally got my eyes open. I gasped and opened my eyes wide. I saw Scott and his mom on either side of my bed looking down at me.

Scott smiled softly looking at me, "Hey Mitchy, how you feeling?" He asked and I bit my lip.

I'm feeling like you're figuring out my big secret and I really don't need you to know so... how am I feeling? Fucking terrified, thank you.

"Weird... but fine. No pain." I said and they both smiled at me until the door opened. When I saw her enter the room my eyes flashed with anger.

"Hi, you must be Mitch's mother. I'm Connie, Scott's mother." Connie extended her hand to my mother who looked like she had the worst hangover of her life, which she probably had.

My mother looked at the hand hesitantly before taking it and putting her fakers smile on yet almost making me laugh. "Mikayla. (A.N I couldn't make her Nel, this woman is too evil) Thank you for bringing my son here. It's much appreciated but now I'm here and I would like a moment with my son."

Connie's smile twitched but she was quick to hide the fact that she was slightly uncomfortable. "Of course. Get well soon hon." Connie said squeezing my knee before heading out of the room but Scott hesitated.

He looked at me with concern, "Mitch I really don't think I should-" I cut him off shaking my head.

"I'm fine. Thank you for all your help. I'll see you at school after I get discharged." I said and he looked at me his eyes furrowed.

"You don't have to go through this alone." He whispered and I frowned gulping before he bent down to hug me. He pressed his lips against my ear and whispered, "you can always come to my house or call me if you need anything, okay?" He stood back up and I nodded before he left with his mom.

As soon as the door shut my mother looked at me angrily. "You couldn't get here yourself? You had to bring other people into it?" She asked spitting her words at me.

I rolled my eyes, "Yeah don't worry about your son or anything, it's not like he's in a hospital bed or anything."

"Well I can see you. You're alive so I know your fine." She retorted and I felt a pang in my chest.

If I didn't already think that she didn't care about me, I know now.

"You wanna know why the fuck I'm in here right now?" I asked starting to feel angrier by the second.

"Watch your language buddy." She said and I laughed loudly.

"Are you seriously trying to parent right now?! Trying to make up for how shitty you've been for the past few years!? Yeah fuck you! Why are you even here right now!?" I raised my voice and she looked around worried someone would hear. She got closer to me and pointed her nasty ass finger in my face.

"You know why I'm here right now! And you know it has nothing to do with you so why'd you ask smart one?" She snapped and I flinched when she pointed closer with every word.

"Okay so if you don't care about me. Pick. Me or your nasty ass boyfriend who beat me and shoved me down the stairs! Fucking pick if it's so easy!" I spit out and she tilted her head in anger before smacking me harshly on the cheek.

I winced and looked back at her with tears in my eyes as I heard the door open. Scott rushed in but I ignored him and stared at my mother in the eyes, "get the fuck out of here or I'll tell the police." I spit out and she looked at me shocked, "Surprised, that I'm actually defending myself? After years and years of neglect and abuse? Well I'm fucking done. If I ever see either of you again I will call the police and have you both arrested so you better get the fuck out."

She looked at me with wide eyes before exiting the room not looking at Scott as she left. Scott stared at me with wide eyes and I just bit my lip to keep from crying.

He rushed to my side and wrapped his arms around me. He rubbed my back and held me close letting me cry in his arms. "You're okay. You're safe." He whispered and I could see a blurry image of Connie walking through the doors.

Scott pulled back and I wiped my eyes finally calming down. "Did she hit you?" Connie asked in a shocked but gentle tone and I nodded slowly gulping. "Is that the first time she's done that?" She asked softly and I shook my head fiddling with my hands.

"She's nothing compared to her boyfriend." I whispered and continued to stare down at my lap. I only looked up when I heard a sniffle.

Scott was staring at me tears running down his cheeks. "Please stay with us. We don't know if she will really leave and you can't go back there when you're discharged. You can stay with us."

I looked at Connie who nodded like it was the most obvious suggestion in the world. "I think I'll take you up on that offer."
