Chapter 19- Two Brothers From Lovelock
*FINN'S POV*
I threw my bike at the side of the garage and saw my parents sitting on the couch, my mom was leaning onto my dad and sleeping, this was the first time I have seen them bond this entire year.
"Hey Finn, 17, huh. You're getting old." My dad said as his eyes were still glued on to the newspaper he was reading, "What do you say? Dinner at hooters. You used to beg me all the time when you were little if you could go there."
"Dad- that was Nick. Not me." I rolled my eyes as he failed to listen to my comment.
"Oh- well how 'bout we just go out to dinner as a family." He said as he reached down to the drawer next to him and poured an unknown drink into his coffee with his flask.
"Taylor, wake up. We are going to dinner for our boy's birthday." Mom groaned and then dad nudged her. She didn't wake up and then dad nudged her harder, painfully.
"God damn it, Sam. I am trying to sleep here! I worked 10 hours today." She said as she laid her head on him again but then he ferociously pushed her off of him, causing me to flinch at his actions.
"We are going to dinner for our son's birthday. So go put on a goddamn dress on for once" he slurred.
"Fine." She quietly said, getting up from the couch.
"I don't want to go out for dinner." I mumbled.
"What'd you say?" My dad took a drink of his spiked coffee.
"Finn, you're turning- what? 16? We should celebrate, I'll get dressed." Mom said as fixed the knots in her hair.
"I don't want to go to fucking dinner! Just give me some money, and I'll- I'll head out with Nick." I took a deep breath.
"Watch your mouth. And don't you dare ask for money like that, if we are not treating you to dinner, you aren't treating yourself." My mom said as she covered her bruised arm with her sleeve.
"Fuck. You." I scoffed, "And by the way, I am turning 17."
Suddenly my dad quietly walked over to me and took two twenty dollar bills out of his wallet and smacked it onto my chest, "Now get the hell out of here."
I scurried out of the house, not even bothering to dry off my wet hair and sweatshirt. I saw Nick standing by our willow tree, he bit onto a cigarette as the rain began to slow down.
"Nick- you're home. That's surprising." I leaned on the tree next to him, watching the little specks of ash disappear as he tapped his cigarette.
"You think I'd forget your birthday? I was gonna go inside to wish you but I figured you would come running out again because mom and dad are a pain in the ass." He offered me a puff of his cigarette but I quietly shook my head, "You don't smoke? I took you for the smoking kind. But then again, we barely know each other."
"Fuck it- I hardly know myself. I wanna try." I slowly placed the cigarette in between my teeth. Inhale- shit, how do I exhale without burning my lungs? I coughed out a cloud of smoke and continued to choke on the horrendous, acrid smell.
"Slow down, kid. We got a house full of police behind us. Have you seriously not smoked before? When I was your age I did all kinds of shit- parties, strip clubs- Las Vegas." He waggled his eyebrows.
"Strip clubs? Las Vegas? Damn" I smirked. "The parties I go to are whack- bring your own alcohol or steal from your parents liquor cabinet. It's lame." I took the cigarette and once again coughed out a light grey cloud.
"You know what we should do for your birthday? You and me- Las Vegas. We'll rent a limo and everything, I'll take you to your first strip club." Nick flicked the cigarette onto the wet grass, I was relieved I didn't have to act like a smoker anymore.
"Today?" I raised an eyebrow, "Wait- how would you afford any of that shit?"
"One. Word. Drugs." He mischievously smiled.
"Holy crap, Nick. You're a drug dealer? You're fucking 19" I whispered, not wanting Holmes and fucking Watson inside to hear.
"Nah, I don't have my own business- yet. But I work for this drug lord, he has the best shit. Joints, Edibles- you name it. And on top of that- bomb ass packaging, so it comes in a matte black box-"
"Okay- shut up. Are you seriously that rich? We can go to Las Vegas?" I smiled.
"I'm not that rich. I have unfinished business in Vegas, I can ask my boss to hook me up with a ride" he said as he checked his watch- a rolex.
"Okay, damn- a rolex?! Seriously" I scoffed. He raised a finger at me indicating that he needed a second, he walked away and put the latest iPhone onto his ear. The curiousity killed me, Vegas could be the best way to forget about this stupid town. I heard a noise and turned to see Gaten, Noah, and Caleb heading to my driveway on their bikes.
"Happy Birthday, Finnlard!" Gaten enveloped his arms around me, Caleb came from behind and ran his fingers through my hair to mess it up.
"Thanks guys- I, um, haven't seen you guys in a while" I stuttered.
"We should throw a party" Noah quietly added to the conversation, "Um- a birthday party. Not one of those stupid bangers or whatever you call it- actually, if you want us to throw you a rager that'd be okay too."
"Noah- it's okay." I smiled, "I am going to hang out with my brother anyways. You guys should just continue your day like any other day- not hanging out with me" I sighed.
"Finn, we have to admit- none of us really hung out after what happened" Caleb added.
"Cool." I gently kicked my foot into the dirt and then I felt my brother's arm around me.
"Holy shit, you guys aren't tiny anymore" Nick said, as he did a bro shake with Caleb. "Wait a second, where's the other member of your squad- the pixie princess?"
"Oh Millie- she's in the hospital." Gaten said sadly.
"Wait, Finn. You didn't tell your family?" Noah whispered to me and I shook my head.
"She broke her ankle- you know girls and their heels" I quickly interrupted.
"Oh okay. Finn- just talked to my...um, friend. The trip is on" he winked.
"Oh, where are you guys going?" Caleb said.
"Las Vegas" he smirked.
"Las Vegas? Isn't that like a six hour drive?" Noah said.
"That city never sleeps, it'll be fun. Two brothers from Lovelock, Nevada driving in a limo to Las Vegas" Nick said.
"A limo? Wow." Gaten's eyes widened.
"More like the back of my dad's squad car, he has an investigation in Vegas. We are just going with him" I lied.
"Finn, it's okay to brag a little bit. It's your birthday after all, you guys should come with us" Nick said.
"That sounds fun- but we agreed that we would stay here for Millie at all times" Gaten said, Caleb and Noah nodded along.
"That sucks- well, um, see you guys later. Thanks for stopping by" I said quickly, hoping they would take the hint and leave. A rush of relief vibrated through my body as I saw them leave my driveway.
"Talked to the boss man, he said first thing tomorrow he will send a limo over. Vegas baby!" Nick said, pumping his fist in the air as he walked back in the house, leaving me stranded in the poorly green lawn we managed to keep alive.*NOAH'S POV*
I walked into the psychiatric wing, where Keith and Millie's parents were conversing.
"I got your call, there's no sign of her anywhere?" I made eye contact with Keith.
"They said she was on the court yard, with Finn. And then after that, she was gone" Keith said as Millie's mom let out a sob.
"Well, she's not with Finn. I just went over to his house. The guys and I went to go check" I shrugged.
"I have no idea where she could've gone. She's so stubborn sometimes, we should have tried harder to get her out of here." Robert said, exasperated.
"Noah and I will look together once more, and I heard Sadie was checking the mall." Keith said.
Keith and I headed back to Millie's house to take a rest, we walked upstairs until we heard a gust of wind push a door open. Millie's door.*KEITH'S POV*
The door pushed open by a gust of wind, I walked into Millie's room and I saw the window open. A shadow was sitting on the roof, at the very edge.
"Millie?" I quickly pushed myself through the window, "Millie, grab my hand! You're going to fall."
"Chance" her voice broke.
"Brown" I said, until I noticed a storm was coming, it was getting dark too.
"It's beautiful, right? For five years, Nevada had this insane drought and now, it rains almost every week" she said dangling her feet and looking up to the stormy grey clouds.
"Brown- there's going to be lightning. Come back inside." I held my hand out for her but she ignored my comment. "Millie! Grab my fucking hand!"
"I'll be fine, the rain is harmless" she chuckled.
"You're senseless. Millie- you have no idea what you're doing right now. Come here!" I was too scared to move, suddenly rain started pouring and the roof was getting slippery.
"Keith! She's going to fall- or jump! Grab her!" Noah shouted, Millie heard his voice and her head shot up.
"Noah's here?" She hugged her drenched body.
"Millie- Noah's here, I'm here. C'mon grab my hand, everything will be okay." I moved a little closer to her but my knee slipped, causing it to scrape my leg. A flash of lightning boomed through the clouds, causing me to flinch. But Millie stayed completely lifeless, immune to the storm raging around her, instead consumed by the one raging inside.
"You know, I broke up with Finn today." She giggled, "then- he basically ended the conversation by telling me that he didn't love me. So basically I was the one being broken up with."
"Millie...he's not worth it. Come back inside" I sighed.
"And, actually, the best part is- the letter he gave me today, was a break up letter- so he broke up with me first." She cried, "You know what it said? I practically memorized it because it was three lines. It wasn't a haiku or a sonnet. Just three lines of pure hatred. And selfishness. It said: Dear Millie, This can't work. I tried and everything's going wrong for us. I don't know how to be there for you, goodbye."
"Millie..." I shivered.
"The fucking roses, and him calling me his fucking present. He was going to break up with me. Because he couldn't take my pain, he couldn't be there for me. I mean what the fuck, he was sugar coating our own break up." She held up the wet paper and started ripping it up, "well fuck your letters, fuck your whole entire existence Finn Wolfhard. I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!"
"Millie, come inside! Please!" I said, as she sobbed.
"For the past three weeks, I couldn't understand why I was sad. It was on the tip of my tongue. I just need to know" she sobbed, moving closer to the edge. A source of g-force took over my body and I embraced her from behind, I used all my strength to drag her back into her room, she didn't even hesitate or resist my grip. We fell backwards through the window and landed onto the floor, which was drenched in water. Noah was nowhere to be seen. I closed the window quickly and locked it, and from the corner of my eye, I saw him in the hallway with his arms hugging his knees and his head hiding in between them.
"What the fuck, Noah?!" I stormed into the hallway, making sure I kept Millie in sight, "why didn't you call the police?!"
"I didn't want her to go back there...to that place- she hates it there" he cried. "I saw her in that bathroom, sad but thank God, alive. But today, I saw her sad, and about to die...I couldn't do that to her, okay?! I couldn't leave her with strangers to solve her problems. We have to help her with her problems, as her friends." He was right, he did nothing but sit there, and I did nothing but stay still on that roof.
