Mackenzie Lowly stares at herself through the glass. Same brown hair. Same speckled face. Yet somehow she feels different.
Like last night had burned a hole into her mind and she could not cover it up in a band aid.
Today was the first day back to school after a very long break. She hadn't seen Tyler in over a week; she missed him but at the same time it was refreshing to be away for a little while. At the same time, there was this lurking beneath the surface.
A lurking that wouldn't go away until she saw his face again.
She heard the engine of his car rumbling outside, but she didn't want his face to be the first thing that she layed her eyes on.
The idea of going through the back door and to the woods to school ran through her head.
She looked out her bedroom window down to his car. This morning was surprisingly light outside, on top of the fact that his headlights were on and the light above the driver and passenger seat.
And in the hallation of the obnxiously yellow car lights, Mackenzie saw it. Saw her. Another one for the line-up. And of course she knew exactly who the girl was. Avery Fox, a girl Mackenzie knew since middle school.
Avery was rather tall and of course, blonde. She was considered pretty by guys, but in reality she had an average face and a huge rack.
That's exactly what made you pretty in their school.
The girl would pile on eyeliner in hopes that she would look like a distressed rockstar on crack. Or something like that.
"Oh Tyler," Mackenzie murmured to herself "I'm so done with you."
Tyler and Mackenzie's eyes met through the windows and he looked at her enthusiastically. Thinking she would open the back door and hop in.
Little did he know Mackenzie did something she never would of done if she wouldn't have felt the way she did.
She ran down the steps as quietly as she could, and ran out the back door, through the woods, until she couldn't see the back of her house anymore.
Tears from the cool wind smacking her in the face formed in her eyes.
And for the first time in a long time; she blinked them away and kept walking.
