In the damp air the moisture rose, proceeding to create dew drops of sorts. Laying on his back, Mike studied one particular droplet making its journey to the center of his forehead.
He watched it gracefully fall from leaf to leaf, almost possessed with the beauty this simple cluster of water could capture.
He breathed in and out slowly, remembering this feeling for any moment that he slipped away again. Drifting from his place of serenity, he snapped back into the rotting reality of the Upside Down.
He squeezed his eyes shut hoping for the dream to die and for him to wake up; but neither happened, and neither would.
With his eyes close however he felt safer, he knew that Eleven was waiting until he went back to "sleep", but he could always tell when she was studying him.
He could feel her pull up his sleeve, and he resisted the urge to rip his arm away from her grasp; as he always had before anyone could ask any questions about the scars on his arms.
He could feel her tracing them lightly with her fingertips; sending shivers down his spine. He hadn't expected her to be crying, but he could feel the warm tears slipping down his actively limp hand and through his fingers.
He tried not to, but it was too late. Tears fell from the corner of his eyes and Eleven was there to hug him straight away.
She was crying too, he could feel he tears through his shirt. She curled up in his arms as they lay there, him slowly brushing her hair back. She turns her head up to him.
"Mike?"
"Yeah?"
She thinks for a minute, biting her fingernails.
"Are we ever gonna get out of here?"
Mike sits up on his arm, wincing as his body shifts by his stitches. He brings his hand up to her face, cupping her chin and pulling closer.
"El of course we are. If it's the last thing I'll do, I'm going to get you out of here."
She wraps her arms around his neck, putting her nose on his; making his smile.
"Mike, if it's the last thing I'll do, I'm going to get you out of here."
"That doesn't surprise me El, you're the bravest person I know. So confident, so amazing, so..."
"Pretty?"
She cuts him off, whispering. The kiss was lighter this time, but this time she didn't want to pull away. Mike intertwined their hands, making her smile against his chapped lips. This wasn't like anything El had experienced, so she pulled away, causing Mike concern.
"El? Was that okay? I'm sorry."
He put his head in is hands and laid back down, rubbing his eyes. She crept over to him and laughed.
"Of course silly, I just needed to breathe."
She smiles and he rolls onto his side, hugging her into his strong embrace. He puts his chin on her head, and the two fall asleep together.
They lay there for what seemed like forever, that was until they heard it in the distance. It was the monster again, and this time they could not do anything about him.
Will was getting too lost every time the monster took over, more and more; it was only a matter of time before he was consumed. And the monster would consume everything it desired; in other words no one would survive.
