Hey this is the last chapter :( And it's SHORT! I just felt like it should end there, ya know? Anyways, enjoy!
Chapter 35
I sat on the porch looking out to the ocean. It’s summer. My favorite season. Summer means so much to me for so many reasons.
“Mom?”
“Out here!” I holler back.
“Mom. Hi. How are you?” I hug my daughter back. When she pulls back I look into her eyes. She has his eyes.
“I’m fine. And how are you?”
“Happy to be here. The kids are setting up in their rooms. They all want the back room.” Elizabeth chuckles. I smile at her.
“Of course they do. It has the best view.” I look over the crashing waves.
“Grandma!” Multiple voices say at once. I stand up and hug the three of them at once.
“How are you?” I kiss their foreheads in order.
“Penny.” I shuffle to the second one. “Jon.” I smile widely at the youngest. “And Tommy.” They show me toothy grins before asking if they can play on the beach.
“Dad would’ve loved to see them.” Elizabeth sighs. I pat her knee.
“I know.”
“The kids still don’t understand why we visit every summer.” She smiles a little.
“They will. When they’re old enough.”
“Mom-“
“It’s fine. I’m fine. It’s been six years.” I whisper out the last part.
“Mom…” She hugs me and I hug her back, shutting my eyes shut. Going back to when I was seventeen. When I first met him. When we fell in love. When he broke my heart. When we graduated. When we went to prom together. When we went to different colleges that seemed like they were a million miles apart. When we met up every summer. When he asked me to marry him. When I said yes. When we got married on the beach. Our honeymoon. When we traveled the world together. When we settled down. When we had Elizabeth. Our first beautiful grandchild. Our second. When we found out he had cancer. When we found out that he wasn’t going to make it. When I sat by him through it all. When he left. The funeral. Tommy being born shorty after everything. I let a few tears escape and land on Elizabeth’s shoulder. Elizabeth sniffs.
“I love you, mom.”
“I love you too.” I place my hand on her cheek and stand up.
“I would love some tea, wouldn’t you?”
“Oh, I’ll make it.” She starts to stand up.
“No, I’m old, not disabled. You go play with your children.” I smile before entering my house and walking down the hall towards the kitchen. I pause and stare at the picture on the wall.
“I miss you.” I whisper to his smiling face. I stare at the card next to the picture.
‘In loving memory of Thomas Jonathon Gray. A loving husband, father and a wonderful friend.’
I stare for a little while longer before slowly walking towards the kitchen.
I ignore the whistling sound the teapots making and just sit at the table staring off into nothing.
Thomas. Thomas. Thomas.
All that’s running through my mind. All I care about. Thomas.
“I love you.” I say out loud to the chair across from me.
His chair.
A breeze whips through the window, and I swear I hear it whispering to me
“I love you too.”
I close my eyes and let it run through my hair.
Summer.
My summer.
Our summer.
That one summer.
