Her words hurt. The words that she spit out at me. The words that asked me if Kelly was ‘one of my girls.’ Kelly is far from that.
“So I was thinking of a way to get you two back together.” Kelly said, while munching on a french fry.
“What?” I ask.
She sighed. “You keep zoning out! Why won’t you tell me why you two broke up?” Kelly dipped three french fries in ketchup, the stuffed them in her mouth.
“We didn’t break up…we’re just on a break.”
“Breaks always leave to break up. Can’t you hear the ‘break’ in break up?” Kelly points out. I feel all my hopes of getting back together being crushed.
“But! I came up with a plan to get her back.” She smirks.
“How?” I finally ask.
“Just ignore her.” She leans back in her chair, arms crossed.I stare at her blankly.
“What? That’s not going to work. Not with Mallory.” I shake my head.
“Well then tell me what’s happened so then I can get an idea on how poor Mallory is feeling.”
I sit and debate whether or not I should tell Kelly what’s happened.
“Fine, you wanna know?”
Kelly nods her head and places her elbows on the table and continues to eat her french fries.
“From the beginning?”
“From the beginning. Go.” Kelly says.
“Okay, so it was the last week of summer vacation. There was a beach party my friend was having. It was the last week of summer blowout. Our last High School summer was coming to an end. The next year, we were all going to be moving to different parts of the world to go to college, so everyone was drinking…a lot. I wasn’t drinking as much as everyone else was, but I definitely drank more than I usually would. There was this girl that my dad somehow knew, but he wouldn’t tell me how they met. So this girl, Nancy, and I hung out for a little. My dad invited her to dinner. He always told me to be careful around her, because she’s not what she seems. Anyways, She was at the party. She hadn’t had a lot to drink, but I had. She offered to get me another drink, and I was too lazy and tired to get up and get myself another drink, so I agreed. She got me a beer. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but she gave me a cup. I don’t drink my beer out of a cup, but I was too dizzy to even care. Before I knew it, I could barely control my body. She dragged me off to my house. My dad wasn’t home; he was out on another business trip. I don’t really remember what else happened, but the next thing I know, Nancy is stark naked in front of me. I’m laying under her in nothing but my boxers. Everything hits me at once. I realize what’s happened. I yell at her.
She doesn’t talk to me for a while, but she does send me a few texts that I never replied to. After awhile, I told my dad, and he told me I should leave. I decide to move here, to see Mallory. I never thought that I would see Nancy again. As it turns out, my dad was right about Nancy not being who she really is. She turned out to really be Melinda, Mallory’s stepsister. Melinda had met my dad when Mallory’s mom and my dad were dating. She saw me and wanted me, so she used my dad to get to me. She spiked my drink to get me alone. When I left, she found out that I had moved here. The night that we ran into Melinda, she had followed us to the park, and dressed up as Nancy and confronted me. I yelled at her and Mallory found out. She thinks that I cheated on her. But I didn’t! It’s all Nancy’s fault, and Mallory doesn’t believe me. It also probably didn’t help me when I snapped at her today.” I placed my head in my hands.
“Well…sounds like you’re stuck.” Kelly mumbles.
I look up at her, “So you don’t think there’s anything I can do?”
She shakes her head sadly. “She feels betrayed. And then it didn’t help when I came up today squealing that I missed you. I didn’t know you two broke up. I just wanted to fight a little with Mallory like we’ve always done.”
“Don’t worry about it. I messed it up anyways. I snapped at her when I heard her tell Joey that she loved him.”
“What the hell? Don’t do that! Those two are like brother and sister! You don’t need to worry about Joey! It’s Kent you need to worry about.” Kelly stands up and pulls a ten from her wallet.
“You’re going to have to prove your love to Mallory all over again. Start from scratch and hope that you can make her fall for you before Kent does.” And with that last note, Kelly walks out of the door.
I look down at my phone. Mallory never texts me back. I sigh and close my eyes.
What can I do?
Then I hear Mallory’s happy giggle. My eyes fly open and land on a sight that makes me sick.
Kent and Mallory…hand in hand.
