I glanced at myself once again in the mirror before heading out. It's our Junior Ball. I decided to wear a light blue sheered and flared cocktail dress paired with my silver pumps.
A knock was heard from my doorway. It was my signal to leave. I hung my purse on my shoulder before heading out.
Lance, in his black and silver suit, stunned me when I had opened my door. I looped my arm to his and headed out.
After an hour of drive, we reached the venue of the ball. There were already several fellow students inside, partying and cheering.
When we had walked in all heads turned to us. I leaned to Lance.
"I think I'm receiving the killer stares now," I whispered then chuckled.
"I think it's me," he replied.
We looked for a table as we laughed. When I had sat down, I caught a glimpse of Ethan looking at me. He smiled, surprising me, before he was pulled away by Lucy. I followed them with my eyes when Lance had spoken from behind me.
"Do you want to talk to him?" he asked.
I shook my head. "I'm good."
"Are you sure? I can help you if you want," he insisted.
I glanced again to where Ethan was, but was surprised to find him gone. "It's really fine."
When I had glimpsed at Lance, he was looking somewhere else. His eyes were behind me. I frowned.
"Kitty."
It's Ethan. I could tell. I've known him so well. The way he has spoken my name over the years, I could tell when it's he who calls me.
Lance excused himself and walked away. Ethan took his seat and looked intently at me.
"You look stunning tonight," he began.
"You, too."
He bowed his head before looking up back to me. "I'm sorry, Kitty."
When I peeked at him I saw sadness in his eyes. "Ethan."
He held both of my hands. "I don't want to lose you, Kitty."
"I'm not sure if I want that, either," I admitted.
He raised his head. His eyes were sparkling.
Or maybe it's just the lights.
"But I'm also not sure if I want to stay…like that again," I continued.
He frowned and shook his head. "What do you want to do?"
"Let me go," I whispered but loud enough for him to hear it. "Only then we can be friends again."
I felt his hands form into fists in my hands and heard him curse. "Kitty…Will you be there for me when I want to?"
I smiled bitterly. "I don't think that would be fair when I already know that you can't do the same for me anymore."
He did not speak for a while. I let him held my hands for as long as he wanted to. It might be the last time for both of us.
When he looked at me his cheeks were wet. He cried. There were traces of tears on his face.
"Then will you say Hello if I say Hi?"
My heart throbbed. "Always."
He reached for my head and planted a kiss on my forehead. "Always take care of yourself, Kitty."
I nodded. I was afraid I might cry if I spoke.
He had taken another glance before he left me. I began to cry as I watched him leave and go away from me.
❤◆❤◆❤◆❤◆❤I really like this song of Mandy Moore.😍 Feel free to listen to it. It gives this feeling of regret, wishing you could've done better before you could even ask the rhetorical question, "Can we still be friends?"
Rhetorical meaning it really does not need an answer because it's already obvious.
It's a big NO.
Well, some say exes can be friends.
I say, it's a lie they both unconsciously agreed to hide the regret they feel for having to let go of each other. But in the case of Ethan and Kitty, they were never together…
So can they still answer the question?
What do you think?
