I couldn't bear it anymore. I tried to relax and calm my racing heart but it was too painful. I tried to join their conversation in hope that I could calm myself. But I couldn't take it anymore. It's happening again.
I excused myself and headed to the comfort room. I entered in an empty cubicle and closed the door. I closed my eyes in pain. I hit my chest over and over again, hoping I could numb the pain by doing that, but it did not work.
It hurt. I didn't bring any painkillers because I didn't think it would happen. I was wrong. I was already crying in pain. I could hardly move. I was paralyzed.
I heard Ethan calling out for me outside. My heart beat faster, stinging me harder. I inhaled and exhaled for many times to soothe my throbbing heart. Finally it calmed down.
Ethan was still calling for me when I opened my eyes. I stood up and head out of the bathroom. His weary eyes met mine.
"You've been gone for too long."
I didn't know if he was scolding or was telling me the truth. Either way, I felt sorry for both of us. I gave him a curt smile before we headed back to our table.
Drake was still there with his date. Mark and Daphne were gone.
"You're pale, Kaitlyn. You okay?" Drake asked.
Ethan took a glance at me and scowled. "What happened back there?"
"Did you get her pregnant?" Drake's date joked but no one laughed.
"I'm fine. I'm not pregnant. I just got tired. I've never danced for quite some time. I should have not tired myself that much," I explained.
They narrowed their eyes at me, like they didn't believe me.
"Where's Mark and Daphne?" I asked, diverting the topic.
Drake's date answered. "They would not stop fighting so they just joined the crowd and looked for dates."
"Are you sure nothing is going on between your sister and Mark?" I asked Drake.
He shrugged. "I wouldn't know. I don't live at home, and Daph never tells what's happening in her life."
I glanced at Ethan. He was still quiet. He did not take his eyes off of mine.
Our topic went back and joined our table. She drank a shot of margarita before breathing out. She closed her eyes as she felt the heat of the alcohol. After a while Mark came in and stared at Daphne.
"Hey, Mark. That's my sister you are checking out," Drake bothered, laughing.
Mark swallowed. "Tell her to dress properly. Guys kept checking out her parts."
"And you are one of those guys?" Drake teased.
Mark frowned. "Daph's a flirt."
With that, Daph opened her eyes and darted them on Mark.
"And you're a player," she pointed.
"You flirt with every guy who danced with you," he said.
"You play with every girl who flirted with you," she replied back.
"I only played with you because you're a flirt."
"I only flirted with you because you're a player."
We leaned back to our seats and tried to contain our laughter as they kept on fighting.
"Is there something going on between you two?" I asked.
"None!" they answered in unison.
Drake let out a laugh. "Mark, I only have one condition if you want to date my sister. Don't flirt back."
Daphne shot a glare at his brother. "I would never date him, Drake! Not a player!"
"See what I mean?" Drake said as a matter-of-factly. "Don't tease back, man. She's too precious to be broken."
Mark puffed out a sigh. "She's a tease."
"You're a tease," Daphne blurted.
Drake's date rolled her eyes. "Goodness! You're like teenagers! You're like two friends who flirt with each other but hate to admit there's something else when it's already obvious. Why don't you just screw each other now!"
Drake and I laughed at his date's burst out. The man who has been quiet the whole time broke the laughter with what he said.
"She's right. Why wait for years if you already have the chance now? Not everyone gets a second chance. And if you're lucky, grab it. Nonetheless, whether it's the first or not, take the risk and tell her what you really feel. It won't take much of your time than wait for years."
I glanced at him. His eyes were still on me, but were not glaring anymore. They were talking and reaching out to me.
"And that is what we call 'based on one's experience.'" Drake joked then lifted his glass for a toast. "Cheers, guys! Cheers!"
We cheered and gave a toast with each other. We drank at the same time. Drake and his date started to make out. Mark and Daphne, on the other hand, were looking away. Ethan pulled me up with him and bid them goodbye. I didn't want to leave but I was tired so I let Ethan take me.
"Do you still have time?" Ethan asked when we stopped at the sidewalk.
I swallowed. Did he know?
"I have something to give to you. Something I should've given to you in our graduation. It's in my flat, though. It's a thirty-minute drive from here," he cleared.
I sighed in relief. "Okay."
He smiled and kissed my hand. He hailed for a taxi and held my hand with his.
