"What's wrong with the twins?" I asked my mum frantically. I knew I shouldn't have gone out!
"Honey, they're just really fussy and won’t let your dad and I do anything and Lani’s mum is here..."
I blinked in surprise. "Okay. I'll get the twins. But why is Lani's mum here?" I asked quietly, looking towards the living room where I could see her.
"She wants to talk to you."
Nodding and walked towards the crying twins. "Hello, babies," I murmured, picking up Matt and hugging him while rubbing Nicole's stomach. "Hello, Mrs. James," I said quietly.
"Hi Owen." she smiles softly. "How are you and the twins?"
"We're good," I tell her quietly, sitting down with the twins next to me, making me feel better instantly. "Why are you here? Not to be rude..."
"I know how this is affecting you both." she says. "She misses you and the twins, I know she does. I've seen her sit with one of the twin’s stuffed animals or one of their blankets and just cry."
"I'm sorry I'm not following this..."
She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. "I want you to talk to her."
"Why should I talk to her, Mrs. James? She clearly kicked me and the babies out of her life."
"Because despite what she has done, you still love her."
"I know I still love her, Mrs. James. But I can't just go running back to her. I don't want me or the twins to be hurt."
"I didn’t say go back to her. Just talk to her." With a sigh, I stroked Matt's cheek, wishing he could tell me what to do. "Maybe, bring the twins." she suggests. "That's all I ask," she said quietly.
I nodded. "I'll think about, Mrs. James."
She kisses Nicole's and Matt's forehead before leaving. My mum squeezed my shoulder. "How was the date?" she asked quietly, smiling softly.
"It wasn’t bad."
She raised her eyebrow and a larger smile took over her face. "Uh-huh, okay."
"We just talked mum."
"Okay, honey. Go get some sleep," she said, kissing my head softly. I take care of the twins and then carry them up to my room and put the, in the crib. I pull off my jeans and shirt and get in bed. Slowly I slip off into sleep, thinking of Sam and Lani.
I wake up to crying and I look at the clock. I've only been asleep and hour and a half.
"Come on, Matty, go back to sleep," I muttered, rocking him gently while trying to wake myself up. But he doesn’t. He keeps crying and then Nicole starts crying. I sighed and quickly walked downstairs to get them both a bottle. "What do you want?" I ask them, placing them down on the bed and frowning. I carry the two bottles up to them, but they won’t take them. I sigh. I check their diapers and they're fine. I sigh once again. I don’t know what they want.
Nicole started screaming and wiggling around. I squeezed my eyes shut as I rocked her. "Please don't cry, Nicky." She cries more and holds onto my shirt. "What's wrong, Nicky?" I ask her, kissing her forehead. She doesn’t stop crying and then Matty starts up again.
With a small groan, I head down the hallway to my parents bedroom. "Mum, can you help me?" I ask her, feeling tired all of a sudden. Why couldn't Lani be here? We both could look after the twins.
She comes out of the room and sees me. "Of course honey." she wraps her arm around me and we head back to my room.
"They don't want their bottle, they don't need changing and Nicole won't let go of me," I tell her quietly, sitting back down on the bed.
