Thirty minutes later I arrive at Lani's house and run up the porch steps. "Hey," I breathed out when she answered the front door.
"Hey," she says not looking at me.
"What's wrong?" I asked, my eyebrows furrowing.
"I've been calling you for hours and you haven’t answered." she glares at me.
I blinked in surprise and patted my pockets for my phone. "Sorry," I muttered. "I must have forgot to put it back on loud."
"Well the twins have been really fussy."
"I'm sorry, Lani," I said quietly, looking at her. She grabs my arm and pulls me into the house and to the living room. She sits down and rubs her eyes. I sat down on the sofa and looked up at her, slightly confused. "What's wrong?" I asked her, frowning as I watched her.
"I'm exhausted." I groaned silently. I felt really bad now. "I didn’t get any sleep at all last night and they're still awake now."
"Go sleep," I muttered. "I'll deal with the twins now, okay?" She didn't say anything as she walked past me up the stairs. With a sigh, I went after her and smiled down at the twins when I stood in front of them. When I look over at her, she’s already asleep. I smiled softly before shaking my head, hard, and looking back down at the twins. "Hey, babies," I said quietly, stroking Nicole's cheek. Her little arms move around. I held her hand and squeezed it. "Why were you two being difficult for mummy?" I asked them quietly, not wanting to wake Lani up. I pick Nicole up and rock her back and forth. She yawned and closed her eyes. I kissed her forehead and smiled as she fell asleep almost instantly. I put her down and pick up Matt. His hand wrapped around my shirt as I kissed his cheek. "Why did you keep mummy up, Matty? You know you're supposed to sleep."
He wiggles in my arms. I looked around Lani’s room but I didn't see her chair so I sat down on the edge of her bed and rocked Matt gently. "Go to sleep, Matty. You need to rest." He starts to get fussy and I take him out of the room. Matt wiggled in my arms and shook his head. "Matty," I sigh. He cried softly and looked up at me. "Do you want something to eat?" I ask him, walking downstairs. I make him a bottle and he finishes it quickly. I burp him and after awhile he falls asleep.
With a small sigh, I go upstairs and put him in the crib before sitting on the edge of Lani's bed and rubbing my eyes. What was I supposed to do now?
I yawn and I find myself falling asleep. When I wake up a while later, my head was next to Lani's stomach and she was sitting up in bed. "You fell asleep?" she asked, raising her eyebrow and smiling lightly.
"Sorry." I murmur moving.
She shook her head. "It's fine, Owen. How long did they take to fall asleep?"
"Half an hour, maybe?" I shrugged and sat up, rubbing my eyes. "Matt wanted a bottle." I tell her.
"He wouldn't take it from me," she said quietly, looking out the window.
"Lani he was being stubborn like you."
She looked at me in surprise. "What do you mean?"
"He wouldn't take it the bottle from you and then he wasn't letting me hold him. He's just stubborn."
"Are you saying I'm stubborn?" she asked, raising her eyebrow and frowning.
"Lani, I'm sorry but you are."
She snorted. "At least he takes after me in a small way."
I grinned and pulled her into a hug before I realised what I was doing. We both froze then I pulled away slowly. "I'm sorry.." I say.
