They continued on, traveling during the night and hiding from the sun in the day. By the time civilization reared into their view they were all exhausted. Even the Ranger who would go days without saying anything, slowed his pace. His light feet took heavier steps. Their water supply was running thin. They drank as little as possible. Taking only sips when they desperately needed it.
"look at me I'm turning into a slave without a single days work" Tyler said.
He showed off his tan legs and arms.
Edith compared it to her own darker tan skin "Not quite a slave"
"slave? I didn't mean-" Tyler started, realizing what he had said could be taken offensively. She waved him off.
"My people were slaves for a long time and that is why we have an advantage in our ways. You've got to know what its like to be a prisoner to know how to live freely" She said.
"You were a slave Edith?" Lance asked.
"no. I never was, but my Queen was" Edith explained.
"well I knew that" Lance said.
"say how much longer until we get to the tower you think?" Tyler asked Lance.
Lance looked into the horizon as the ant sized shadow of a tall building.
"It should be right over there" Lance pointed.
Tyler took out a long old looking telescope "hm shouldn't be too bad"
"things always look closer in the desert." Edith warned.
"Morn are you okay?" Simone said suddenly and loudly. Everyone stopped and looked around in alarm.
Morn was as pale as the moon. His face looked thin, and he seemed to sway in the night breeze.
Bitter whimpered beside him.
"I'm fine, whats got you all in a fuss?" he said.
Simone went straight for him a jug of water in his hand. Morn waved it away.
Lance took out his.
"you look like shit. We can take a rest just drink." Lance offered.
"I'm really fine" Morn said angrily.
Bitter growled and tugged at him.
"knock it off" Morn said to her.
She didn't listen to him.
Morn swatted her away and she barked.
"we're stopping here" Lance told the others.
"Sit" He ordered Morn.
"fuck off we can keep-" Morn tried walking but Lance forced him to stop.
Lance handed him water and Morn gave in. He took a sip.
"where is your canteen?" Lance asked.
Simone went up to Morn and put a wet rag on his face. Morn threw it off.
"Fuck off all of you" He said.
Lance nearly hit him. He took Morn's canteen and filled it with his own. There were merely droplets left.
"I told you that dog was trouble" Edith said folding her arms.
"You shut up!" Morn shouted. He looked drunk in his eyes and his voice slurred.
Lance squinted his eyes and then recognition came over him.
"you've been giving it all to Biter"
