The light was still going down when they woke up again. Rovera didn't sleep much. She tossed and turned. She was the first one awake.
"did you have a bad dream?" Simone asked.
"No I just couldn't sleep" Rovera said.
"Did you see Nyam?" Lance asked.
Rovera shook her head.
"I just miss my mother" She said.
"Me too" Lance said.
Morn scoffed. Lance prayed Morn didn't wake up in the same mood he went to sleep with.
"It might be hard to believe but me and Morn have the same mother" Lance said.
"Your brothers?!" Her eyes got big.
"Half brothers" Lance said.
"I had no idea" Rovera said.
"I know, we don't look much alike, we take after our fathers" Lance said.
Rovera cocked her head sideways "Well I guess now that you mention it I see some similarities"
Edith rolled over on her stomach and pushed off the ground with her good arm. She used her good leg to prop herself up. Lance handed her the crutch he had made. She took it and began packing her things.
"how's you're foot feeling?" Simone asked.
"peachy" Edith mouthed to him.
Simone gave her a draft and she downed it in one gulp. In the blink of an eye they were off into the wilderness once more.
The Ranger rode swiftly through the trees. Lance couldn't tell if he was excited to be so close or he sensed danger in their wake but he was riding cautiously. Either way he didn't question it. Rovera would sometimes talk behind Simone randomly at nothing and he was often confused weather she was talking to him or not. The way that she spoke to the air as they rode made him question his own sanity for want to believe there were actual beings talking to her. The trip had openly ruined his skepticism of anything unbelievable. He was sure Tyler, wherever he was felt the same. Often when he spoke he would first think 'what would Tyler say' before he said it. Tyler was good with Nyam and Simone, although he taught children in the Del-foil, he didn't have much experience with them. Rovera was older than some of the children he mentored but he could tell there was a special kind of treatment she needed he was ill prepared for, almost like Nyam. He mostly kept to himself under the protective trees of the Delfoil. He missed the solitude and green things. But sometimes, he regretted spending so many hours alone. He wondered if he ever made it back if they'd even recognize him at all.
They frequented their breaks for the horses sake. Rovera took a liking to Simone's and named it Peach. Every time they stopped Edith would hobble on her leg and do exorcises. Simone forbade her to use her arm and put pressure on her foot but it didn't stop her from doing one handed pushups during every stop. She moved more than all of them combined until she was so tired every night she was the first to sleep.
"Are you scared you're going to look like an actual woman or are you just trying to show off?" Morn asked her.
She ignored him.
"Watch out Morn, she could be trying to kick your ass" Lance said.
"You'll need two feet and two arms for that" Morn said.
Edith still ignored him.
When they made camp that night Edith, despite the pain kicked the air using her wounded foot. She grimaced every time her leg extended. It made Simone sweat just watching her. Even with her foot in bandages she kept perfect form. She didn't last for very long before Simone stopped her and changed out her bandage.
