Kelley's POV
I laced up my boots and for a while I stared down at the floor. Today was game day and our match was against Romania.
"Are you okay?" I hear Becky ask as she laces up her own boots at the locker next to mine.
"Fine, why?" I ask as I sit up straighter and fix my hair that was wrapped into a tight bun.
"Just making sure." Becky says with a smile as she stands up to meet with Carli leaving me alone with my own thoughts. I look around the locker room and see everyone doing their usual pre game rituals. Alex was sitting inside her locker with headphones on while Sydney, Crystal and JJ were dancing it out in the middle of the locker room while everyone was laughing.
It was a very welcoming sight to see everyone having a good time and even Morgan seemed to be enjoying herself and I let out another sigh. I stood up and I walked over to Morgan and tapped her on the shoulder.
"Can I talk to you?" I ask and she nods without saying a word. She follows me to the showers which was empty leaving us a quite place to talk.
"If you're hear to yell at me again-"
"I'm sorry, okay? I know I am such a screwup and ruin everything. I am happy for you and Chloe, Morgan. She's really good for you and that's what matters."
"Oh... well uh... thanks." Morgan says as she plays with the black hair tie that was on her wrist. I looked down at her soccer boots and saw that she was still wearing the ones that I gave to her one time on her birthday and I can remember that day clearly only because that was a good day.
"Listen, this is our first match together because you know... my accident. And I want you to know that you're going to do great tonight like you always do. You're a really talented player, Morgan and I know because I was your coach but we're teammates now." I say and a smile formed on Morgan's face and I was surprised when she threw her arms around me.
"Thank you." She whispers into my ear. She pulls away from me and with one last smile, she walks away and I let out a sigh relief. I walked back into the locker room, ready to walk onto the field for the first time in almost an entire year.
*
We were in the second half now with one goal from Carli and another goal from Alex. I looked over to the sideline and I saw the ref hold up the sign with Morgan's number 14 in green and Tobin's number 17 in red.
I watched as Morgan jogged onto the field with me and the rest of the team and I was trying to meet with her eyes but she was far to distracted with the game.
The game continued and as Romania grew even more desperate for a goal, they also grew more physical.
"Are you kidding me?" I say as I walk over to the ref, giving Romania a free kick.
"I'd walk away number five." She says and I felt Alex tugging me away from the ref and I swore, if Alex hadn't pulled me away the last thing that ref would have seen was my fist. I cursed under my breath as I jogged to my position.
Morgan had the ball at her feet and I watched as she danced with the ball until a Romanian player completely knocked her down. For a while I just stood there and when I saw that Morgan wasn't moving I ran over to her side and saw that she was clearly shaken up.
"That's a fucking red!" I yell at the ref again but she doesn't point the red card to the Romania player, she points it at me. "You're serious aren't you?" But she didn't say anything she wrote my name on the card and I stormed off of the field and onto the bench.
"Is Morgan okay?" I ask Tobin who was watching from the side lines as I slip a jersey over my head.
"Let's hope." I say. The trainers helped Morgan up to her feet and I can tell that kept insisting that she was fine but she was led back to the bench just in case.
I sat down next to her and handed her an ice pack for head and she looked at me with a small smile.
"Are you okay?" I ask.
"Fine."
It took a lot of effort to stay where I was and not kiss her. But I was so tempted to either way. She was perfect but I couldn't have her.
