'Ryan get up, you need to get ready'

'Yes mum'

That's me Ryan Sokolov and as usual I'm late for school. My mum Anna moved over to England twenty years ago, when the United Kingdom was part of the European Union and it was easy to travel in and out of the country. Mum and dad were both born and raised in Russia......

'Ryan get up', Anna's voice bellowed from downstairs. Already I could hear movement in the house and although there were two bathrooms in the house, they would both be in use.

'I'm up mum', I yelled back, pulling myself to a seated position on my bed. I looked over to the other bed in the room. It belonged to my younger brother Steven and it was already empty and the bed made up.

Anyway, as I was saying. Mum and dad were both born and raised in Russia and like many Russians they moved to England for a better life. Unlike most Russians, my parent were on the run from the authorities.

A banging came to the door. 'You better be up young boy'. This time it was my dad, Boris, he was calmer than my mum.

'I'm getting up now papa', I said calmly getting to my feet

'Good boy', he paused and I knew he was listening for my movement, so I shuffled myself over to my wardrobe and bustled around the bottom of it where I threw my dressing gown the previous night.

'I've bought some of that new Fruit Sensuals cereal for you, so be quick'

I turned my head to the door, even though there wasn't anything to see. I had seen the adverts for this many times on television and was keen on trying them. 'Thanks papa'. Somehow this had the desired effect, I was immediately awake and rushed to retrieve my dressing gown.

Outside in the corridor uncle Vlad was sitting at the top of the stairs. He turned round to see me.

'You okay uncle'

He smiled. 'I'm fine boy. Why you never listen to what your mum tells you? In Russia you would have been flogged and left outside in the snow for the day'. Uncle Vlad coughed. I was a hefty cough, that lasted quite a few moments. Vlad was not in the best of health.

I rushed over and slapped him on the back.

He pushed me backwards. 'What are you doing smacking your uncle. Go downstairs and have your English breakfast'

I had landed on my back. I wasn't upset though, my parents had always taught me to respect my elders, especially in the family. They would say that it separates the Russians from the English, manners and respect.

I got up and walked past Uncle Vlad, I took a few steps down before turning back to the elderly man.

'You not coming down? I could help you'

He looked at me with scorn on his face. 'No, I'm not and even if I was to go down to eat, I wouldn't need your assistance'. He then took a bag out of his pocket and pulled out one of eight severed fingers and started to suck on the severed end.

Oh....that reminds me. I forgot to tell you that my family are all vampires.
