I was sent to my room, as the adults discussed what had happened downstairs. After a couple of minutes a knock came to the door.'Yes', I said nervously expecting my parents to walk in. The door opened and Steven stepped in shutting the door behind him.
I looked at him. I wanted to cry.
'Can I sit down'
I nodded.
He walked over and instead of sitting on his bed, he sat next to me on my bed. He remained silent and after a long moment said, 'I can't believe you killed that idiot'
He laughed and I couldn't help what came out. It was a mixture of laughter and tears.
'Whatever they say. I'm proud of you', he said.
It provided me with some comfort, but the aching inside felt desperate and painful. I had killed someone. It may have been an accident, but it was the intention that caused the act.
We remained in silent until another knock came to the door. Dad opened it and asked for me to join him downstairs. I followed him down, Steven followed me down. I could see mum, uncle Vlad and Sofia downstairs waiting to judge me.
I got down to the bottom step and held onto the banister. They crowded around me. Steven sat on the stairs halfway up and somewhere I also felt the presence of Gleb.
'Sofia has informed us of what has happened and we've discussed it at length', mum started talking. 'I can't imagine what you're going through right now and I hope what I say here tonight doesn't make you feel any worse about it. But this can never happen again. It's not for you to supply food for this family, it's not for you to take vengeance for what happened to your friend. We are vampires, we have to feed on human meat. You, do not.
'In many ways I pity you for that, in others I envy you. In regards to killing for food, I envy you, this is not something you will have to do during your life. This is why we attempt to find people who would not only, not be missed, but have performed such a reprehensible act that they deserve to die.
'Unfortunately, what you have done is done and you will have to live with that. But we do not want someone living here that would bring trouble to our door and this will bring trouble. So....', she looked at dad and dad nodded, '...for your punishment you will no longer be allowed out of the house for longer than an hour, without either your dad or myself seeing you, unless it's to school and if you cause another issue of this magnitude you will be sent back to Russia to live with your Great Aunt'.
I wasn't aware of me having a great aunt.
'Do you understand what I'm saying'
'Yes mum...and I'm sorry', I ran towards her and threw my arms around her. It took a few second before she fell into my embrace and closed her arms around me.
