'What happened?', Maureen quizzed us. I left Patrick to do the talking.

'It was nothing, he just hit me'

'That's not nothing. Why?'

'Because I bumped into him'

Maureen studied his face, then looked at me. I dipped my head, because as far as I was concerned Brian bumped into Patrick, not the other way around.

We were standing in one of the playgrounds and school was over. Maureen stood with her hands on her hips, looking from me to Patrick and then back again.

She breathed heavily and changed the subject. 'What have you chosen to do on sports day?', she asked the two of us, frustrated by the previous conversation.

This would be a good time to describe Maureen, as I'm guessing you already have a mental picture of Patrick. Maureen is a brunette, short cropped hair and dresses like a Tom-boy when she can get away with it. Maureen wasn't adverse to a fight, which was probably one of the reasons she was friends with us. We had a tendency to attract the bully and require protection.

'I've got the four hundred meters', Patrick said, clearly not enamored by the prospect.

'Nothing', I admitted.

'What?', they both said at the same time, both for very different reasons. Patrick was wondering how I had managed to get away without having an event. For Maureen, she was enraged by the thought that I would be the one to miss out on the fun.

'Everyone has to do one', Patrick said and Maureen looked at him, surprised he had said exactly what was about to come out of her mouth.

'I'm gonna make sure you do one', Maureen promised.

'Please don't', I responded, hoping there was no way in which I would be required to run around in a t-shirt and shorts.

'Shall we go?', Steven turned up. 'We need to go'. He said pulling at my arm. I looked at him and saw the urgency in his eyes.

'I have to go', I said to my friends.

'Okay. See you tomorrow', Maureen said as we walked away, 'Steven. What events you doing on sports day'

Steven shouted back, 'One hundred, two hundred, one of the long distant event, the javelin and the shot'
