I know this part is difficult to understand, but I am truly not a vampire. The first person born of the Sokolov family that isn't. In fact dad would inform me that I was special, as I was the only person born of two vampires that wasn't one, as far as he knew.

Mum, on the other hand, thought it was the beginning of a curse. That I was the beginning of the end of vampires as we knew them. That's a lot of pressure to put on a fifteen year old.

Anyway, life wasn't bad as a human and I was convinced that mum was just scared about seeing me grow old and dying before all of them.

That leads me nicely onto the age issue. But before we go onto that, let me chat about the rest of my morning. After eating my cereal, I went back up to my room to dress. In the mean time Steven had left for school, Uncle Vlad was still seated on the stair debating whether to make the journey down to the lounge.

'Why is my bedroom on the top floor', he moaned as I stepped past him.

In truth, I figured it was a deliberate ploy by papa to keep him out of the way and to avoid having to hear him constantly coughing.

When I made my way back down, uncle Vlad and shuffled down three stairs. I didn't offer him any assistance. I knew what his answer would be, although I was sure when I got back from school he would have moaned to my parents that I didn't offer him any assistance.

Anyway, I didn't have to wait long for the bus to arrive. There were no other students on the bus, but that was no surprise, as I was already late.

Right, now with time on my hands, I'll explain the aging issue. When a vampire is first born, their metabolism and aging process are the same as humans. This starts to change slowly in the first few years, very slowly. As they get older, the aging process slows and the desire for human meat increases. Every vampire is different and the change occurs faster in some, which means that in looks, a vampire who is much younger than another may look much older. At some point the aging process eventually stops and at that point they'll look the same for the remainder of their lives, barring weight loss and gain.

This, as I figured, is very fortunate for Sofia, who had the power to light up a room as she walked in.

The bus stopped and I got off. No doubt I would be sent to the headmaster's office for yet another lecture.
