Punishment, wasn't punishment at all. It was the same as usual. One hour detention, after school, for the rest of the week. As it was a Tuesday, that would be five days....if I ever attended them, which I didn't. The teachers didn't want the hassle of hounding me about it, so never reported my absence back to Mr Lewis.

I walked into the middle of Biology class. This should have been a boring class, if I wasn't so aware of the fact that I was human and not vampire. There was a constant reminder every time I went home.

Mum and Uncle Vlad were the worse for reminding me. Uncle Vlad made a point of performing the most depraved vampire activities in front of me, hence why he was sucking on a finger this morning. I often wondered if he was making sure the humanity in me didn't turn on them. Mum, on the other hand, was more subtle with her approach, that's if you ever attribute subtlety to mum. Let's just say she never made it implicitly clear in front of me that she had concerns about me not being a vampire. She would, however, watch me carefully and make attempts to change me, as though it was my choice to not be a vampire. For example, I would wake up in the middle of the night and she would be standing over me, her eyes blacked out, chanting incantations.

I bet you're wondering why they just don't turn me, as it's an easy process for the vampire. The problem with this, is it involves the human actually dying and their personality changes in some way. This is different based on the individual, but that's for another time.

I headed to the only seat that was free, at the back of the class. Patrick and Maureen both looked in my direction and smiled.

Patrick and Maureen were my two best friends. Most people in the school thought of me as being weird and I was, but I had reason to be. I wasn't brought up in a usual household and I wasn't privy to a human's lifestyle. Patrick and Maureen are the only two people in the school that accepted me for being me.

Sorry!, I should add, that although I use my family background as a excuse for my lack in popularity, this isn't the same for Steven, who has popularity oozing from him. I have my own explanation for this, which I'll address later.

Now, to the important introduction. One of the boys seated at the back was Brian. Brian was big for his age and the school bully. With any school bully, comes some side kicks and they tend to be some of the largest boys in the school. This wasn't any different, Brian had Duke, Jack and Bill.

There had been many a time I would sit in contemplation as to whether every male person whose name contained five letters or less had a ruthless streak about them.

Brian's popularity didn't just stem from him being a bully. He was also the school drug dealer, which meant he had money and as I made my way to my seat, I witnessed him palm over some drugs to the girl seated next to him.

He looked up at me and smiled. It wasn't a similar smile that Patrick and Maureen gave me to welcome me. It was a smile that told me if I said anything I would most likely be dead the next day.

I sat down. The biology teacher hadn't even acknowledged me coming in.
