Officer Daniel Brown: Thank you for agreeing to come back in Ms. Carter.
Jade Carter: You're welcome.
Officer Daniel Brown: I'm sure this has all been quite a shock to you.
Jade Carter: To say the least.
Officer Daniel Brown: Well we really do appreciate you taking the time to help us answer a few more questions.
Officer Daniel Brown: Last time we spoke, we talked about some of the extracurricular activities you and Connor participate in separately from each other. Now we aren't so much interested at this time in Connor's robotics club duties, or in his tutoring of Anna. We'd like to focus on some of the other things you guys are a part of, especially things that were regularly scheduled.
Jade Carter: Well, Connor-
Officer Daniel Brown: Sorry to interrupt, one more thing just to clarify, we'd like to hear about the things Connor does, but we are also interested in activities you do, just want to be clear.
Jade Carter: Well, every Wednesday, I go to the Winesday event at Whole Foods with my friend Cara. And I sometimes meet with my students during the week after work. Those are really the only things that I do during the week. I go to the gym in the morning before work as well.
Officer Daniel Brown: And would these afternoon weekday activities completely correspond to when Connor was with Anna, or would they sometimes extend over that. What I'm trying to get at is: did any of your weekday activities extend over his time with Anna to the point he was left with alone time.
Jade Carter: For the most part no. I can't say they always line up perfectly, but for the most part I am back around the time Connor is returning from driving Anna home, around 6:30 or 7. Occasionally I will be later, but not often, or regularly.
Officer Daniel Brown: Okay great. And the gym, you go there every morning?
Jade Carter: Yes. Every morning Monday-Saturday. I do classes, usually with my friend Cara, or sometimes some of my other girl friends.
Officer Daniel Brown: And Connor doesn't join you?
Jade Carter: Connor goes to the gym at his work, during his lunch break.
Officer Daniel Brown: And what does Connor do everyday while you are at the gym? What time do you normally go and what time does Connor leave for work?
Jade Carter: Well, like I said last time, I normally wake up around 6, or I guess really it's a little before that, maybe 5:45, I just roll out of bed and put on my gym clothes super quick. And I go to the gym which is only about 5 minutes from our house, for a class from 6-6:45. I usually come back home and shower, so that I'm ready to leave around 7:15. Connor gets up around 7, so I usually see him getting out of bed right before I leave.
Officer Daniel Brown: So the morning that Anna went missing then, that wasn't your normal routine? You didn't mention going to the gym that morning.
Jade Carter: Right, well my friend Cara was sick and couldn't go to our usual Tuesday spin class, so I decided to skip it too, I guess I was feeling lazy.
Officer Daniel Brown: And you didn't notice anything different about Connor's routine that morning? You said last time that he left before you, did he take anything with him that was unusual? Or would he have had time the night before to pack anything into his car. Have you noticed anything missing at your house?
Jade Carter: He definitely didn't take anything unusual that morning. The night before, that would have been Monday night. I met with one of my mentees, but I was home by 6, and he was home from tutoring Anna already by then. I didn't see him move anything into the car, but if he got home early from tutoring Anna, or did it while working from home, it's possible I guess. I haven't noticed anything specific missing, but I haven't looked.
Officer Daniel Brown: Okay, and what about on the weekends? Did you have any regular activities then?
Jade Carter: Well, my activities on the weekends usually consist of the gym on Saturday mornings. I usually go for a bit longer and do the sauna, hot tub, and steam room as well as swim some laps on Saturdays. And after the gym I go to brunch. I have several different groups of girl friends between high school, college, law school, work, and other friends that I've met elsewhere and I sort of alternate between going to brunch with different groups every week. And then, Connor and I go to Abby's soccer games on late Saturday afternoons, usually having dinner with my family afterwards. But we do that together. And then Sunday's we usually go to church, and do unscheduled activities together. Sunday's are kind of our day as a couple.
Officer Daniel Brown: Okay so you're together from late Saturday afternoon for the rest of the weekend. What about Friday nights?
Jade Carter: It depends, we sometimes do things together like date nights, sometimes we do things with our separate groups of friends.
Officer Daniel Brown: And what does Connor do on Saturday mornings while you are at the gym and brunch.
Jade Carter: Connor is a part of a hiking club. He wakes up very early, around 5am and they drive out to locations, usually in West Virginia or Pennsylvania, and do extremely long hikes.
Officer Daniel Brown: How long is an extremely long hike?
Jade Carter: I'm not sure distance wise, but Connor usually doesn't get back until around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, so they're pretty lengthy. Of course that includes the drive, and they usually stop for lunch and such, but still.
Officer Daniel Brown: And have you ever met any of Connor's friends from the hiking group?
Jade Carter: No, none of them live nearby, it's a group for this whole region so a lot live in Western Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, or Virginia.
Officer Daniel Brown: Interesting. And what does Connor usually wear to these meetings?
Jade Carter: He normally wears athletic shorts and t-shirts, sometimes hoodies, and brings his hiking backpack with supplies.
Officer Daniel Brown: So, we have had the opportunity to talk to a few of Connor's friends, and they were able to give us the name of this hiking group.
Jade Carter: Yes, it's like the Mid-Atlantic Mountaineers Club or something
Officer Daniel Brown: Yes, and we were then able to interview all of the members of this hiking group, which does actually exist. They told us that their hikes are normally, as you said, in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, or Western Maryland. The hikes begin at 7am, about 2 miles from your house, and they usually go a distance of about 8. They said with stopping at overlooks and for lunch, they usually return to their cars at about 11:30 and head home. So the time frame fits approximately what you've told us.
Jade Carter: Okay...
Officer Daniel Brown: But when we interviewed the group about Connor, none of them knew anyone by that name. We even showed them a picture, in case he was using a nickname of some sort, and no one recognized him. Not one member.
