I'm pulling on your heart to push my luck

'Cause who's got any time for growing up?

I returned to the cabin just in time to get a front row seat to an argument.

"Which part of no do you not get?" Christian drawled, every part of his voice oozing with sarcasm.

"Christian, I-" Lissa began before being brutally cut off. "No! Lissa, you don't get to apologise!"

I leaned against the doorway, curiosity making me stay there instead of returning to the room I shared with Dimitri and flopping down on the mattress to mope.

Christian whirled around, anger written all over his face. "You cheated on me with Dimitri. Dimitri of all people!"

He slapped his palms on the table, an audible sound echoing around the room. "You knew he was dating Rose. Hell, you and I were dating. Do you not know the definition of dating?"

Lissa's face reddened as she opened her mouth again to protest. But Christian continued on, "It means emotional investment, being committed to your partner- hell, it's even considered the prelude to engagement!"

He sighed, his anger ebbing as quickly as it came. "Look, I didn't want our relationship to end so quickly, but if you had told me about your true feelings, maybe none of this would have happened."

Lissa's lip wobbled, tears starting to well up at the corner of her eyes.

I couldn't help but reach out to prod the bond between us, finding nothing but lies and manipulation lurking in the other side.

Don't fall for her tears, I silently willed Christian.

"Christian, please," Lissa pleaded, "I just want to apologise!"

"There's nothing to apologise for, Lissa. You decided that when you let Dimitri kiss you." Christian said, raking a hand through his hair in quiet frustration.

Awkward silence descended on the room, and I decided it was time to dramatically drop into their conversation.

I sauntered in between the two of them, placing my hand on Christian's as I smiled coquettishly at Lissa, whose impending tears had dried off immediately.

"I don't think you need to worry about apologising to my boyfriend, Lissa," I smirked. "I think we're both faring quite well with our new partners."

I could see Lissa's teeth visibly grinding in her mouth. She forced a smile over her pale cheeks, red lips stretched thinly over white teeth in a well-practised courtly smile.

"Alright," She said, fake smile still painted over her face. "I'll see you two at dinner, then."

I laughed, though my chest sank at the thought of having to face Dimitri again later.

Christian tugged lightly at my hand, leading me away from my ex-best friend and towards his room.

"We'll be okay," He murmured, squeezing my hand tightly in his.

I squeezed back, glad for the support he brought me.

Christian shouldered his door open, making way for me to prance into his room, trip unceremoniously on a cup, and fall onto his bed.
