Peeta

Hi, I'm Peeta. Peeta Mellark. I'm sixteen, a sophomore, and I just moved to this new town called Plum Creek. I moved here for a lot of reasons and I will explain why.

First off, when I was thirteen and our family was on vacation in New England, the house we were staying at caught fire from a lightning bolt and burned to the ground with my mother and younger brother Marcus inside. My father and I drove back up to the house after a fishing trip to find ashes and a heavily burned mom and little brother. They both died at the hospital nearby.

My father sank into a deep depression and would not speak to anyone or do anything to help me out. For six months he only got out of bed to take a shower, eat, and change clothes. And then he simply sank into alcoholism where he was at now.

The final reason is what happened two months ago right outside of school in the parking lot that pushed me over the edge. But you will find that out later....

As I finished unpacking the boxes and cartons that the moving men had brought in, the doorbell rang. As I had no idea who it was, I cautiously opened the door.

A girl with brown hair in a thick braid, green eyes, olive skin, and a pot of what smelled like roast beef in her hands stood there grinning. She was very pretty and her smile instantly put me at ease.

"Hi, I'm Katniss Everdeen and welcome to Plum Creek! I'm your new neighbor and I'm so glad to meet you!" she said in a highly sincere tone of voice.

I laughed and said " I'm Peeta Mellark and I'm from the city of Silver Lake. Its nice to get to know a friendly person like you."

"Oh, no problem! I love meeting new people and by the way tomorrow is the first day of school. Looking forward to going to Panem High?"

"Yes, I am. Would you like to come in?" I asked.

"Not right now because my mom and sister expect me home but I just wanted to drop by and see you. Nice talking to you!" Katniss replied
as she ran back across the yard while I still stood on the front door holding a pot of roast beef like a mannequin.

My house is actually built inside the top floor of the new bakery my father opened as a way to get back into life once again. Thank God we have a upstairs doorbell though....

As I walked back into the bakery, I unfortunately bumped into a customer. He turned to look at me and I saw a big, muscular blonde with ice-blue eyes and a tan that could make girls faint.

"Holy shit, watch where you're going!" he barked. I shook everywhere to the point of where I was afraid I would drop the pot all over the place.

" I-I'm s-sorry." I squeaked as I ran back up the stairs to the house. He shouted something back at me but I didn't stop to listen....

Cato

I stood there looking at the brown stain all over my new top and curious to know who the newcomer was. He was shorter than me but he was built. I guess when you work in a bakery you are gonna get ripped lifting all those damn breadpans! His hair was as blond as wheat, and he had the softest blue eyes anyone could ever have.

Honestly I was so busy staring I forgot the reason I came in the bakery in the first place. Then I remembered it was to buy some loaves of rye bread for my mom who loved spinach on rye for no apparent reason.

I bought the loaves from an older man with a mildly sad expression on his face and drove back home. All the while I was thinking about the new boy and how to get to know him better.
