The killing of waiting

"Tina, take that into an evidence bag, will y'a? Wouldn't wanna destroy any evidence the bastard's left behind now would we?"

I wait for the officer to turn his  attention back to me.

"All right, Mr. Kerner. So, can you tell me exactly what happend tonight?" I took a deep breath and started recalling the Happenings of this evening.

At 5pm I had left my Office as usual and tried to call my wife on the way to the car to let her know I was on my way home. We had agreed on that because These days it was almost exceptional that I got off work on time.

As I couldn't reach her I guessed she was with the Kids so I hung up and drove home.

Arriving at the house I first didn't notice anything, habitually getting the mail out of our Mailbox, flipping through it while Walking to the door. I opened the door with my keys, entered and as I looked up the first time on the way to the house I realized something was wrong.

Firstly my children were not running towards me as they always did to welcome me home. Secondly my wife didn't welcome me neither calling my Name asking if it was me - as if anyone else would just come in with a key.

I put down my things finding the letter as I walk up to the table. It was like I was transfixed on this Little sheet of paper that I did not even take in my surroundings.

Our living room was a beautiful mix of old style and modern. My wife had made it her Job to make a home out of a house hanging up Family Pictures and Pictures of each of us individually all around the living room. A black ledder Couch and a huge flat Screen tv took in half of the living room, a wooden Dining table with it's matching chairs took in the other half. Games and the childrens stuff to Play was lying all around. But all I could see was the letter.

"So you came home and the door was locked which must mean that either your wife has opened the door to the kidnapper or he used another entry. Is there another one? Mr. Kerner?"

I snap out of my day dream or better Memory, look at the officer and ask: "What?"

"Was your wife expecting any one? Is there any one who might have visited?" "No, she would have told me if there was someone coming over tonight." "Alright then, is there anyone with a reason to kidnap your Family and threaten you?"

I thought about his question, I really did, but no one came to my mind. We didn't have any enemies. I told him so.

"That is all for the Moment sir, you'll hear from us if there's something new. You must know though that we will only start searching for them tomorrow and before we do we'll get back to you and ask if they're back. We's appreciate it if you contacted us before tomorrow if they did."

I looked at him in astonishment.

"Wait? You mean, all I can do is sit around and do nothing and you are going back to your office to drink some hot tea or something?" I was truly hoping he was kidding.

"What did you expect us to do? Kick all the rules out of the way and invest time in a search that might be solving itself out within the next hours? Sorry sir, but we've got enough cases on our hands as it is. If they don't return within the next hours or actually stay lost long enough to reach the 24 hour limit I guarantee you we'll be the first to go out look for them."
