Chapter 39
"Love, I need to go." Newt said quietly, shaking my shoulder. I jolted awake, not even realizing that had I had fallen asleep. I must have nodded off a while ago, its pretty dark outside. The boys were filing their way back inside the homestead. I heard the doors open and close, and the footsteps heading down the hallway. The rhythmic tapping of the boys shoes echoed down the hallway.
"Em?" He shakes my shoulder again.
"What?" I mumbled. Newt sighed.
"You're falling asleep again. I need to go." He explained, rubbing my back.
"Mhm, no. Stay, I don't want to be alone." I mumbled, snuggling closer to him.
"But...Emmy, you know I can't. Alby says that after the sun goes down, there's not supposed to be any boys in your room. You know that."
"I don't care. Alby can make me wash Minho's running shorts for a week, I just don't want to be alone." I explained, yawning and hugging him so he wouldn't leave. Newt ran a hand through his hair and bit his lip.
"You really don't want me to leave?" He said, hesitantly. I nodded and yawned again. Newt nodded, smiled a bit and took a deep breath.
"Alby is gonna kill us, ya know that, right?"
"Yup."
"Alright, well as long as we both realize that, I'm okay with staying for the night."
"Yay." I mumbled, my head resting on Newt's shoulder. I yawned for the millionth time. He shook his head, let out a quiet laugh and looked down at me.
"You know, Minho and Frypan both said you should get some sleep."
"I was asleep."
"That didn't seem like it was helping you get any better. It seemed pretty stressful, actually."
He was right. If anything I was even more exhausted now than I was before, and I felt a bit feverish.
"But I'm not tired," I yawned. Newt raised one eyebrow and shot me a look.
"Alright. Come on, you're exhausted, go to bed." Newt said kissing my forehead.
"Okay." I mumbled, half asleep already. Newt stood up and helped me lay down, before he tucked the blanket up under my chin. The next thing I knew he was laying next to me. I curled up next to him, resting my head on his chest. I smiled a bit, feeling so much more safe.
"Newt." I whispered.
"Hm." He whispered back.
"You sure you're okay staying here tonight?"
"Yeah, it's fine. Go to sleep."
"But you don't seem tired."
"I'm not."
"Why aren't you tired?"
"I don't know. Go to sleep."
Newt brought one arm up and rested it behind his head, his other hand still resting on my back.
"Newt?" I whispered again. I heard him take a deep breath.
"Yes, Emmy?"
"How did you hurt your leg?" I mumbled. I could feel Newt tense up and he sucked in a breath of air but didnt say anything. He sat like that for a minute, not saying or doing anything. The only thing that changed was that his heart beat a bit quicker in his chest.
"How do you know I wasn't born with it?"
"I'm a medjack. I can tell, you haven't been like that for too long." I yawned. Newt just sat quietly again. I could feel his heart racing in his chest, but he didn't move.
"Go to sleep, Emmy."
"But,"
"Just go to sleep. It's not important."
I didn't say anything after that. I could read his body language so easily most of the time. Usually, I knew exactly what was going through his mind. Now though, I was having a hard time telling what he had been thinking. The way his breathing slowed down but his heart sped up, it was like he was trying to hide the fact that he didn't want to talk about it.
"Okay. Good night Newt." Was all I mumbled. I heard Newt take another deep breath before he said calmly,
"Good night."

It's been a week since my incident in the maze. I don't know what's happening to me. I've had 3 more incidents where I collapsed, and 2 more where I completely passed out. I don't know what's wrong. I can't run in the maze, as decided by Minho, since what happened last time. Every day has been so repetitive. Alby made an executive decision to keep me in the medjack hut. his reasoning was that I would be in the shade, with Jeff and Clint in case something happens. It makes sense, but I would prefer to work in the gardens or something. I was able to spend most of my free time with Newt nowadays, which I was glad for, but i was still bored all day. Gally's come into the medjack hut with a smashed finger twice, Minho came in because he cut his arm running, and a few other people hurt themselves. Not that I'm saying people getting hurt is good, because it's not, but it's been boring. I've heard so many of Jeff and Clint's stories by now, I think I know every injury that's every happened in the glade.
I don't know. Probably not actually. I'm sure something happened to Newt or Alby or someone. Jeff and Clint didn't say anything about any of the keepers either, except for Minho and Gally of course. I guess the good things about working with the boys was that they knew most of the embarrassing stories around the glade. For example, when Frypan somehow cut his hand pretty badly while making cookies. I don't understand what he was cutting while making said cookies, but it happened. Or there was the time that one of the sloppers slipped in the bathrooms and chipped their tooth. That one made me laugh pretty hard.
"Emmy." Clint called, waving his hand in front of my face. I snapped back into reality.
"Yeah?" I said back, turning from my spot of staring out the window to face him.
"Your shift's over. You can go get some lunch or something." he said. I smiled and looked over to Jeff.
"Oh, okay. Thanks guys." I said. I turned and walked ut of the medjack hut, before calling over my shoulder.
"have fun with your make out time!" I shouted back. I heard the two boys laugh, and shook my head. (Sorry, I ship them so much I mean, they're always alone together just one on one, so...)

"Hey Fry!" I shouted, pushing the door open. The hut was empty, which meant it was the perfect time to question him. Frypan smiled at me and grabbed a plate from the stack of dishes next to him.
"Hey Em, how ya doing?" he asked. I smiled back and pulled out a chair from a nearby table to sit on.
"Pretty good. how about you?" I said, smiling. He started plating up the chicken grilling on the stove next to him.
"I'm doing fine. You want some lunch?" He said. I nodded. Frypan stopped and looked up at me, raising an eyebrow.
"Wait, you haven't asked to help me cook. Normally you zip back here and do something to the food I'm making, sooo......what do you want?" He said. I rolled my eyes.
"I just want to talk." I said. Fry shook his head.
"Just eat your food." He said, setting the plate in front of me. I took a bite of the chicken while he made a plate for himself.
"Add some lemon." I said. Fry sighed.
"Aaaaaand there it is. Thanks for the input Em." He said, rolling his eyes. He walked back to the stove, sliced a lemon and added it to the food. He shook his head and stirred the food, before calling back.
"So, what'd you wanna talk about?" He said. I set my fork down and looked over at him.
"How'd Newt get his limp?" I said quietly. Fry didn't look at me, just kept cooking.
"I don't know why you'd ask me that. I don't really know about all that. That's a question for the medjacks." He replied. I felt a frown tug at my lips.
"But, they haven't told me anything about Newt. They said that the keepers, Newt and Alby haven't really had any accidents or injuries." I sighed. "And Newt won't tell me." I glanced over at Fry, who was still cooking.
"Em, I...I can't tell you that. I guess he must have had it when he came up in the box." Fry said. I tilted my head to the side.
"What do you mean? Did you see him limp his first day in the glade?" I asked. Fry shook his head.
"He was here before me, Em." He glanced up at me before going back to his cooking.
"Oh, right..." I frowned. "What about when you came up in the bo-"
"No, Em." He sighed. I nodded slowly, before what he said sunk into my brain.
"Wait, he wasn't limping when you came up in the box?" I said. Frypan stopped.
"I, uh...I-I mean....now that I think about it he was limping then too." He stammered.
"Fry," I said impatiently.  He bit his lip and turned off the stove.
"Okay. He hurt himself. It's not a big deal. A lot of runners get hurt in the maz-uh.....I-I mean, uh.....klunk." He said, turning around and washing dishes.
"Wait, what?!" I said, jumping out of my chair. "He was a runner?!" I could feel my voice getting more shrill and high pitched with shock.
"Um....no." Frypan said. He turned and dashed out of the kitchen.
"FRYPAN. I NEED ANSWERS GET BACK HERE!!!" I screamed and followed him outside.
