I woke up and just sat there for a while. Something had woken me up.  I scratched my neck. Got damn dry spot was becoming more and more annoying. It’s getting worse if anything. I leaned over and grabbed my pajama bottoms off the floor and slipped them on. I footsteps coming up the hall, lately I been hearing a lot things. Sometimes things I shouldn’t even hear. They weren’t my mom’s foot steps, she damn near walked like a cat. The footsteps stopped at my door, the door opened up.

“Good you're up, your mom wants you dressed and downstairs.” My uncle said to me. I rolled my eyes at him.

“Doesn’t anyone freaking knock? I’m tired of everyone just walking in here.” I didn’t have a lock on my door. Never did and I don’t know why. I asked my dad about one a billion times but he just brushes it off.

“I’m your uncle kid, I don’t have knock.” Uncle Jasper took one arm wrapped around my neck playingfully chocking me.  “Just because today is your birthday doesn’t mean I’m gonna treat you any different.” Uncle let go of me and smiled.  I turned and went in the bathroom.

Mom didn’t say much of anything in the car ride. She hasn’t said much of anything all day. She kind of looked nerves. She said was taking to meet my grandparents. Which was odd, till now I’ve never met them. I remember then when I was a kid, but never much after that. These were my dad’s parents of course, I always so my mom’s parents. It was still odd that I never got to see them.  We got to a big house and my cousins were  arguing about something. Made me glad sometimes that I didn’t have a brother or sister. I was an only child and I liked it that way.  They must be here with Uncle Darrick  and dad.  Mom went in the house.

“ So it’s your birthday?”  Caleb  said looking at me with a wide smile. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my cousins. They were like actual brother and sister to me. None of my uncles or aunts had kids. So it was just us, which made us close.  “I got the feeling this is gonna be an extra special one for you.” His twin sister Cali elbowed him the ribs. I couldn’t really focus on anything right now cause my neck itched like hell. I didn’t know how to tell mom about the things on my neck.

“I hope so.” We all went in the house. We went into the living room where I saw my dad talking to my mom.

“I don’t think we should tell him just yet.”  My mom whispered to my dad.

“Raven, we can’t put this off anymore. He’s slowly changing before our eyes. You rather wait till he comes home freaking out.  The longer we wait, the longer he is at risk.”  My dad said back to her. Where they talking about me? How the hell could I hear them from across the room?

“I know, but we don’t know how he will take it.  What if it’s too soon?”  I stood there listening to them.

“That’s a chance we have to take it.  This is always the hard part, be we have to rip the band-aid off. His life has been normal till now, we can’t go on….” Dad stopped talking. Mom looked at them. “He’s listening to us.”  Both of them turned around. How did he know that?

“What are you two hiding from me?” I asked them.  “What is going on” My mom walked over to me talking me and pointed me to a sofa.

“We want you two meet your grandparents.” Dad said.

“I don’t want to meet anyone, tell you two me what is going on.”  I snapped at them. “Mom has been nervous all day, and for the past week dad’s been whispering a lot of the phone.”
