"How did that happen?" Mrs. Powell asked with a smile curled upon her face. I couldn't keep my thoughts cleared. I was worried about Ben.
"Wasn't paying attention...." I mumbled to her. I should have figured it was her. Everything was starting to make sense. Jazz couldn't smell her because she saw her every day and my smell was masking her. This whole time in class Mrs. Powell had been given out hints the whole time.
"Is something wrong over here?" My Uncle asked me. I looked at him. Where the hell has he been. How did he not know what was going on with Mrs. Powell.
"Riley hit his head on upstairs window." Sophia told him.
"It's not that bad really, just a bruise." Which I am sure was slowly disappearing. My Uncle looked at me with angry look on his face.
"Sounds like you need to call your mom." Yep he was angry.
"I'm alright really, besides I promise Sophia another dance." I looked at her. Her cheeks were red again. Before my Uncle could say another word I directed Sophia to the dance floor. Right away she wrapped her arms around me. Out the corner of my eye I saw Jazz slip back into the dance.
"What is it that you and your friends do?" I didn't know what she meant by that.
"Same thing everyone does, hang out. Regular stuff really." And deal with supernatural shit like being a wolf, a vampire. Body snatching by a vampire and sleep walking. "It might not be as much fun from the point of view you sit from." Compared to being one of the popular girls at school, with popular friends. Her definition of fun could be different from our's.
"Oh really?" Sophia said softly. "From my point view. The three of you always look like you're having fun. From where I sit, it's not as fun and great like everyone around me makes it seem. We as humans categories every little thing to make it easy to understand. Even our selves. We hang out with people that have the same label as us and reject anyone that isn't. In that process we are missing out and losing opportunities with other people. Being around the populars or whatever you want to call it. It's all that it's cracked up to be. Always talking about crap that is meaningless." I looked at Sophia.
"Are they even aware that your this smart?" I felt like I was seeing the real Sophia right now. The person she really was on the inside, was her right now.
"They know I am smart, which is why I think some of them want to be my friend. Someone that could help them with their studies. It's sad but some of them aren't so bad when they aren't putting on show." I reached and pulled Sophia close me, she almost stumbled. "Riley.."
"You don't ever have to put on a show for me Sophia. You'll always be welcome to hang out with me and my friends. You can also always come and talk to me." I watched as her cheeks turn scarlet red. I carefully brushed her blonde curls away from her face. I came in closer to kiss her.
"HANLON!" Fuck! I looked at Couch from across the room. "I better see some space between you two. This isn't Degressi. I didn't know if I should be amused or annoyed right then.
"Your friends are lucky to have you." I smiled really big, which felt good to do with out braces. Sadly my smiled my my thoughts went back to Ben. I needed to find him. I needed to break whatever was controlling him.
After the dance was over my mom came pick us up. Jazz had never came back to the dance, which worried me. We didn't know what Ben was capable of doing. I had a lot of information to share with my folks. This was the low point of having a best friend that is a wolf. I couldn't tap into her mind at all. Her DNA was mostly wolf even though Uncle Jasper is a human. The wolf gene is more dominant in her, which means I couldn't hear her mind at all. Every time I even tried its like loud TV static in my head, and it hurt. Jazz's brain was on another frequency. At the moment I had also forgot the less nerves I was, the more chatty I become. I had not noticed till the car stopped at Sophia's house. I got out the car and came around to her door. Once again I was graced with a lovely view of her legs. Beautiful, long, tasty, blood filled...shit I was doing it again.
"Earth to Riley" Sophia poked me in my forehead. I was so busy watching her legs I didn't realize we were at her front door.
"Sorry I was just thinking I didn't want you to change." Sophia looked lost. "What I mean to say is, don't let high school change who you are Soph." I heard her mom coming and I knew my own mother was watching me from the car. I quickly kissed her on the lips. Both of us felt a little sad we had to part. "I'll call you tomorrow to make plans." Riley help me! That was Ben's voice. Sophia's mom opened the door.
"Thank you again for letting me taking Sophia to the winter dance." I smiled sweetly. The best part about tapping into the human mind and body. Knowing what strings to pull. Her mother may have not like me, but I knew what to say to her sorta like me.
"Hope you two had fun." Her mother wrapped her arms around herself trying to protect herself from the winter's night air. "Say good night Sophia, it's cold out." Sophia's lips parted and her soft airy voice came out. I said good night as well and got into car. When I did I noticed the look on my mom's face. She was grinning like someone gave her a giant lollipop.
"What?" She took off down the street.
"You have your father's charm." Mom said.
"Funny you say that." Wish I could charm Stone and Dunbar enough so they could stop making my life hell. Two weeks ago they stole my pants and gym shorts. No one needed to see my boxers, or that my leg hair is the same shade of red as my hair.
"So when is Sophia gonna have dinner with us? Maybe she will come over for birthday party. You should invite her over..." I rolled my eyes.
"Mom no. There is no party. I am too old for kitty parties. And we can talk about dinner after. Are have more important things to discuss." Mom looked at me.
"You aren't having sex are you Riley? Because we have had this talk before and..
"Mom, stop please." God I wish she hadn't said that.
"Please tell me are using condom Riley because....
"Mom you said another word about sex, I will jump out this car while it's moving" Just hearing her say that made me want to set fire to my ears. "Talking to your parents about sex isn't awkward." Said no person ever.
"What is it you want to talk about? And where did Ben and Jazz go?" Now she notices this.
"That's what I wanted to tell you. We know who the vampire is pulling the strings behind everything." I told her. "I heard Ben's voice not too long ago. He sounded scared, but he must have known I would hear him.
"Where are they?" My mom asked.
"I don't know, I can't trace Ben like before. So we will have to find Jazz. When we were at the dance, we found out who the other vampire was. Ben showed up, we confronted him..." Was not telling her Ben grabed me by my throat. "He jumped off the second story of the building. Jazz went after him." Mom's foot pressed down on the gas, going over the speed limit.
"Times like these makes me hate driving. I rather be on foot."
