I got my key out and unlocked the door. Mom wasn’t gonna be home for another hour. Ben and Jazz came inside arguing about something. My mind was still on the bus ride home. Sophie sat right in front of me on the bus ride. I could still the fragrance of her shampoo. I still haven’t worked up the nerve to actually talk to her. Even if I did talk to her, I wouldn’t know what to say to her. I had not clue as to how to talk to any girl, let alone the women of my dreams. I put my head down on the counter as Jazz and and Ben started pulling things out the fridge.
“Why didn’t you talk to her?” Ben asked putting the chips on the counter. I had no idea what they were about to make, but I hope they cleaned it up after. Mom would be pissed if she came home and saw all the food out.
“Because I don’t know what to say to her.” I replied. Besides my brain always seemed to be in another place whenever I get near her. Sometimes in the last place it should be if you catch what I am saying.
“Just walk up to her, and start talking. Just like you talk to me.” Jazz said to me. That was easier said then done.
“Just forget it. I’ll figure it out and some point. Just not now.” I hated to talk to them about this. Only because they didn’t get how hard this was for me. I never really liked another girl but Sophia. If Ben turned his eyes in the right direction, any girl would come flying to his call. So he never had struggle with what to say, when he looks and charm did it for him. Jazz on the other, never really dated anything. Well, anyone that we’ve met. Not even sure when she went out dates if it was a guy or a girl. We never really asked her about.
Jazz turned her head. “Did anyone hear that?” She said turning the conversation away from me. I listened careful. Someone was on the roof of the house. I picked up the butcher's knife off the table.
“What is that?” Ben asked.
“I don’t know, but stay close to Jazz.” Jazz started following me out the back door. I opened the glass door. I couldn’t smell anyone sent.
“Their masking their sent. I’m not pick up anything.” Jazz said to me. I came down on the back deck into the grass. I looked up at the roof of the house. I focused and looked thru the trees.
“Someone is there.” I focused even more. I couldn’t pick up the footsteps but I could pick up the heartbeat. “Come out, or I’ll come in after you.” I called out. I watched my Uncle came out the trees.
“Very good, but you need work.” He said putting his glasses in his pocket. “You should have picked up on my presets soon as I got close enough range of the house. Jasmine picked up on my presets before you did. Which isn’t bad, but your level of awareness should have kicked in just as fast.”
“Well that’s why you're my teacher. “ I pointed out to him.
“True. I see I am going have my work cut out for me.” He said smiling. “I hope you plan doing some real damage with that knife Riley. And that’s not just for you own peace of mind as your protection.”
“Nope, this knife isn’t just for show.” I replied to him. I looked at Jazz and Ben who stepped back out of the way.
