When I started my first year of middle school, I expected a blast. I expected to make tons of friends on the first day of school, like I had for elementary school.

But I was all alone until a week later when I got to know more people. I became the girl who was always happy.

I grew a nice reputation for myself, as expected. Nothing was what I imagined, but I liked it. It was nice.

So, middle school's where it all began. I had to move to Alrich city and go to a middle school where none of my other friends were going to.

My new house was cool, finally I wasn't cooped up in an apartment.

One day, I was walking home from school and I saw a man driving near. He rolled his window down as he slowly drove beside me.

I shifted my backpack's weight, getting ready to run. My mom had told me what to do in these situations; kick em' where it hurts and run.

But before I could run, the man jumped out of his car, and gave me a rusty old book. He said, "Read it. You'll love it!" And he went back in his car and drove off.

It was strange. At first I didn't intend to read the book. What kind of man drives up to a girl and tells her to read a book? A crazy person, that's who. But I smiled at him kindly and waited for him to drive off.

Once he did, I put the book in a trash bin and ran home.

So yeah, of course I wasn't gonna read a dusty old book with weird doodles on the cover. It seemed sketchy and I didn't want a part of it, as I wish I didn't now.

I came home and opened my bag to do some homework. As I got a pencil out, my mom came in my room and handed me a package.

"I don't know where it came from, Sadie," she said. "but I hope you didn't waste any of our money."

"I didn't, mom I swear." I say, opening the package.

It was the book.
