Sadie Martin's POV.
I walked with Lilly for what felt like hours, but I enjoyed every second of it.
She was easy to handle, sometimes it feels almost as if Lilly knows what I'm thinking.
Whenever I start to think about mom, she nuzzles the palm of my hand, and seems almost sad.
I can't help but feel like she knows something I don't.
Sometimes I'll ask her questions, like where her food is, and she'll take me there without question. I asked the stables man and the blacksmith about it, they said none of the horses were trained.
Lilly was special, unique, different from the other horses.
I liked that about her.
Eventually, the blacksmith walked towards me, with a tall black horse and a skinny white horse.
My smile turned into a frown, as I walked towards the blacksmith with Lilly beside me. She didn't need a rope or anything, she just followed wherever I went.
"Mr Blacksmith," I started, "I don't want to take any horse on this journey, not if I can't take Lilly."
He laughed a little, and smiled. "My name is Phillip, sorry for not introducing myself earlier. You are taking Lilly. This horse," he made hand motions to the skinny gray horse. "is the horse Jackson will use for tomorrow."
"Jackson is joining us?" I asked. "Since when?"
"Since just a couple minutes ago, actually." He looked puzzled, kind of worried too. "He'll be with us by the time you wake up tomorrow. We will take off as soon as you're awake and ready."
"Okay."
We walked out of the horse pen, as the sun was starting to set. We were supposed to leave the horses in a private table for tomorrow, but Lilly wouldn't stop leaving with me, so the stable men just let me keep her.
"Did I sleep in your room last night?" I asked. It's been a question in my mind since the day before.
"No, that's a guest room. Don't worry, Sadie, you're fine." He replied.
I sighed in relief. When we got back to the blacksmith shop, Lilly stayed calmly outside of the building, but Phillip insisted on tying her up. I hated the thought of an animal getting tide up, but I didn't really have a choice.
We retired for the night, and sure enough, Jackson was sitting in the shop waiting for me by morning.
Today, I had taken a shower, since I didn't know how long it was gonna be before there was a lake or river again, during our travel.
I still wasn't easy about the idea of killing someone, but I'm desperate. I need my mom more than anything right now.
I feel so lonely without her.
But at least now I have a friend, who will stay beside me for when I need her.
"Finally, you're up, Sadie." Jackson smiled kindly. There was something about him. I shrugged it off, though, thinking it was just because he practically poisoned me and put me in a cave, forcing this mission on me.
"We should head out now." I followed Jackson and Phillip out of the shop, and I was surprised to see Jackson's horse beside mine.
Jackson's poor horse was thin, it's bones sticking out. It was kind of scary. But today, I was shocked to see cuts on it's back.
Surely, Lilly couldn't have done that, it looked like a wound of a whip. Blood was surrounding the cut, it looked like it was still bleeding.
I hate animal abuse.
"This is Kristen." Jackson slapped his horse, trying to make the slap look friendly, but I could tell it hurt the horse, fear grew in his poor, dark eyes.
I can't help but think that he starves the poor horse, too.
Jackson and I waited for a while, as Phillip went to go get his horse, which was named Buttercup, typical horse name.
While I was comforting Lilly, letting her nuzzle my palm, as she loved to do that, Jackson stared at the floor, seeming to be deep in thought.
"How did Kristen get that cut?" I asked, "Surely, it wouldn't have been Lilly, the cut is too deep and thin."
Jackson looked at the wound, and I watched as his expression turned worried, as he tried to clean up the wound. But he clenched his jaw the whole time, doing a terrible job to hide the anger in his eyes.
Lying, animal abuser!
Eventually, Phillip came back with Buttercup, and we left the village on horseback.
As the sun starts to set, Jackson starts a fire and sets up three sleeping bags, one for each of us. Lilly laid down behind me, her fat belly giving me something to support my head on. Buttercup and Kristen were tied to a tree, already sleeping.
"Aren't you guys going to sleep?" I asked Phillip and Jackson. They looked at each other, and back at me.
"No, not yet." Jackson said, smiling. "We need to decide the plan for this mission. You go to sleep, you need all the energy you can get."
"Goodnight, Jackson, Phillip." I laid down with Lilly and soon after fell asleep.
Soon after, though, I wake up to hear Phillip and Jackson whispering.
"Please, Jackson, I did as you asked-"
"Shh! Did you hear something?" Jackson whispered sharply, making me jump. I decided to pretend to be asleep, Jackson and Phillip were hiding something and I need to know what.
"I don't hear anything, Jackson. Please, I took Sadie here so you could take her on the journey to kill the evil queen. You promised you would-" Phillip's pleads were interrupted as Jackson whisper yelled, his quiet voice threatening. It sent chills down my spine.
"I will do as I promised when Sadie gets to the castle. You haven't done your job until I'm certain she'll kill the queen." Jackson sneered.
"Are you sure Sadie is the one? She seems like an ordinary girl." Phillip asks.
It's true, Jackson! I wanted to jump out of bed and yell. I'm not special, all I want is to go home!
I silently shook my head in anger. This is the way home.
The only way.
But they're hiding something... I need to listen in more! Clear your head and listen!!
I don't know what else they said, as my thoughts covered my ears. All I hear now is snoring.
I didn't sleep for the rest of the night, I couldn't stop thinking about what Jackson promised Phillip.
Writers note: So, how do you feel about Jackson, and his animal abuse! Definitely something different about him, I never liked him, not one bit!!
