Anxiety was the first to wake later on that day. He had soon shaken Roman awake(after blushing as he realized they had been clinging onto each other as they slept), insisting that they walk just a little farther so that they were in a more covered area. Once they got there he helped Roman sit gently on the ground, asking to look over where he had gotten hurt.
"It's just bruised," he assured Roman after looking at his back. He had hit that tree hard, and it was a surprise that he hadn't broken anything. "You're still beaten up pretty bad though, we should stay here and rest as long as we can."
"I'll be fine," Roman shook his head. "We'll stay here and rest for a few minutes and then keep going. I'm sure you want to get out of here as soon as possible too."
"What's gonna happen if we run into any danger?" Anxiety pointed out. "You're going to make things worse for yourself. We're staying here to rest, at least for today, and you're not changing my mind."
Roman sat in a stunned silence for a moment, not expecting Anxiety to disagree, and certainly not expecting the finality in his voice. Roman decided against arguing, and instead opted for starting up a conversation. He took a while to think of what to say, getting distracted looking at Anxiety. The other was lost in thought, teeth tugging at his lower lip, a concerned look on his face. After a while he looked up at Roman, both of them making eye contact. Roman felt his cheeks heating up, and noticed Anxiety going pink as well.
"Wh-what is it?" He questioned, not meeting Roman's eyes. Roman laughed awkwardly, silently cursing himself for getting lost in thought staring at Anxiety. He didn't know what to say, and stumbled over his words for a moment before sighing and starting over.
"We work well together." He said, then felt his face grow even warmer as he realized how else it could be taken. "I mean, wh-when we're not arguing. You did well against those spiders..."
"Thanks," Anxiety shrugged. "Could have done better though... We both almost died."
"We didn't, though. How many times have you done that before? None. You did amazing, for someone who's never actually fought like that before." He smiled at Anxiety, who glanced at the ground to hide his own grateful smile. Roman found that he liked seeing him smile.
****
Anxiety was glad Roman thought he did well, especially since he had been worried he had messed everything up. He still felt as though he had, Roman was injured, and they weren't very much closer to being out of here. He put that thought aside as he spoke with Roman, both of them making jokes and laughing. The two of them were getting along well together.
Both of them were laughing at something Roman had said, when Anxiety realized this. It made him pause, and think about things. If none of this had happened, would they ever have ended up getting along like this? Back home it was constant arguing, there was the occasional conversation the two would have(The Dark Side of Disney video being an example), but otherwise the two never stopped bickering long enough to actually laugh and joke together. Which brought Anxiety to another question; was Roman really enjoying talking to him, or was it all an act?
There certainly wasn't anyone else out here to talk to. Maybe that was the only reason Roman was being so kind. Of course it was, what was Anxiety thinking. He couldn't like Roman, they both hated each other. He didn't want to be Anxiety's friend, no one did, Anxiety didn't have friends. He was the bad guy, even if the others wouldn't admit it. He couldn't be friends with Roman, even in this situation. They both just wanted to make it out of here alive, that was it.
Anxiety didn't notice that his smile had disappeared and he was lost in thought until Roman nudged him. "You okay?" He looked concerned. Anxiety reminded himself that it wasn't real.
"Yeah," he nodded, faking a smile. "Yeah I'm good. Just, thinking."
"Alright," Roman nodded. "We should... both probably be resting for now. Gotta be prepared for anything, out here."
"Yeah." That seemed to be all Anxiety could say today. He sighed, and laid back, facing away from Roman.
Roman sighed as well, wondering what had gone wrong. He had just been joking, and then Anxiety seemed so sad. Was it something he said? Did he do something wrong? Why was he so suddenly concerned about what Anxiety thought of him?
It was just him being worried, he told himself. After the nightmare he had, where Anxiety left him behind out here, he was just worried. He didn't really care, he couldn't. Since when could he and Anxiety get along? He laid down too, staring up into the trees and sighing once again.
He knew what he was feeling. He didn't want to admit it. He couldn't admit it.
As both of them lie there, beating themselves up for thinking too much into things, neither noticed the royal's missing sword.
I just wrote three chapters of this and it's 3AM now but I'm gonna keep going anyways. At this point I just need to write about 5 more chapters and I'll have completed the book. I'm also going home tomorrow, yay! I'll have my dog back, hopefully soon I'll have my phone back, and I'll have plenty of time to write on wattpad at more reasonable times. (Ha, like I did that normally)
Anyways I'm gonna go write some more. Bye-Bob
