Mistakes

Roman was terrified.

The two of them had started acting, and while they hadn't messed up just yet, he really couldn't remember most of the lines. To both of their surprise, Anxiety was the one who remembered most of the lines. He thought it was just because he was always the most nervous about it, so he did his best to memorize them to avoid an embarrassing mistake.

Roman was barely stumbling through his own. However hard he tried to imagine this was just a normal everyday thing, he still was aware of the fact that if he forgot even one word he was dead. Both of them had tears threatening to fall, but neither of them let themselves cry. They were terrified, but if they cried then they would be killed for sure.

Roman was talking. He knew his voice was shaking, and he did his best to keep from messing up, but he couldn't remember what came next. He hesitated, panicking, and let out a choked sob. He tried to remember, and although he wasn't positive he tried to say what he thought it was.

He had skipped a line.

He paled, realizing his mistake. Roman looked up at Anxiety, the other looked just as terrified as he did.

Anxiety saw the floor beneath Roman collapse, watched the royal as he started to fall. He jumped forward, grabbing Roman's hand and doing the best he could to hold him up.

"No, no, we're almost out, we almost made it!" He cried.

"Anxiety, please," Roman begged, looking up at him. "Let me go. I made the mistake, that means you get to go. So go home!"

Anxiety shook his head, refusing to let go of Roman. He knew he couldn't hold him up forever, and he knew without him also trying to get out, he couldn't pull him up. "Come on Roman, we can both get out of here!" He reasoned. "At least try!"

Before Roman could say anything, he noticed Anxiety starting to slip. He had no time to warn him before they both fell down, landing hard at the bottom of the hole. Roman quickly got to his feet, wondering why he wasn't far enough down to really be hurt. It was far enough that he couldn't reach to get out, but there seemed to be nothing there to harm either of them.

Before he could get Anxiety to his feet, the place they were in fell dark, the place they had fallen in becoming sealed. Cursing, Roman fumbled around in the dark to find Anxiety, finding his hand and pulling him up, not letting go of him. "Anxiety, are you alright?"

"I'm fine," He mumbled. "You?"

"Just glad you're safe." Roman breathed a sigh of relief, still not letting go of him. "What do you think is going to happen now?"

"I... I don't know." Anxiety's voice wavered nervously. "I just want to go home..."

"You could have." Roman frowned. "You should have just let me go when I told you to. Then you would have been free. Why didn't you do that?"

Anxiety had no time to come up with a response, he was beginning to panic. It felt like the walls were closing in on him, slowly, very slowly, but still getting closer. Roman seemed to notice it too.

"Wh-what's happening?" Roman questioned, stepping away from the wall and closer to Anxiety. "The walls, they're moving!"

"Roman, the reason I didn't just leave you, the reason I didn't just go home without you-" Anxiety was cut off.

"Is this really the time to be talking? The walls are closing in on us!" He shouted, putting his arms out as if that would stop it from moving closer. Anxiety knew there was no getting out of this one, though.

"Yes Roman, please just listen to me. The reason I didn't leave, I couldn't go home without you. Roman, I know we argue all the time but-but I love you!" Anxiety rushed out, tears in his eyes. "I just want you to know that. Before... before we die."

"No," Roman shook his head, pushing against the walls with all his strength. Anxiety felt confused. "No we are not dying in here!" He cried, trying to trying to push the walls away to no avail.

"Roman please," Anxiety didn't bother hiding his scared sobs. "Stop it. Please, stop it."

There was silence for a minute, Roman had stopped pushing against the wall, and had now slumped over onto Anxiety, Anxiety's arms wrapping around him as Roman just stood there.

"I'm sorry," he whispered at last. "I'm sorry for how I treated you. I'm sorry I couldn't save you. I love you too, Anxiety."

Anxiety stood there for a while, contemplating something. After another minute, he spoke up. "Virgil, actually. Or, Verge. That's... my name."

Roman looked up at him in astonishment, and Anxiety just shrugged. "Someone might as well learn it..."

"I'm glad that I'm the one who gets to hear it." Roman smiled, a sad, desperate smile. "I'm still so sorry, Virgil."

"Don't be," he glanced away. "I'm sorry too, though. We've both messed up. I wish we had fixed that sooner." He laughed weakly, looking back up at Roman.

The both of them looked at each other as the walls grew closer, pressing against their backs now and forcing each other closer. Without saying another word, Roman leaned down, and in their final moments the two shared a kiss, ignoring everything else. They didn't focus on how the tight space made it hard to breathe, or their increasing discomfort, only aware of each other, and their love.
