Ava flew into the emergency department, her eyes scanning the crowded room for her best friend. She heard her before she saw her, the broken hearted sobs a tell tale Natalie sound that only she knew. She turned just in time to be consumed in a bone crushing hug as Natalie clung to her and sobbed anew. "Nat what happened? Oh my god you gotta tell me what happened!" she tried to not sound scared shitless but from the sound of Natalie's sobs it wasn't good. "Did she get hurt Nat? Did she eat something she shouldn't have? Nat please, tell me what's going on!"
Natalie finally calmed herself down, stood up and rubbed the heels of her hands across her eyes, sighing heavily...god she looked like a wreck Ava thought. She guided Natalie over to a more private area of the waiting room and sat her down, handing her a tissue from the box next to her. "Nat you gotta talk to me honey" her gentle prodding seemed to work because a minute later she was hearing the worst possible news come out of her mouth. "Bryleigh's body rejected the transplant...she relapsed and if I don't get Brian here soon she could...she could..." but Natalie couldn't say it. She couldn't say the word 'die' because that would make it too real, but still, Ava got the hint and felt the world drop out from under her. "Oh my god Nat, no" she whispered, her hand covering the sob that wanted to escape her lips.
Ava took a second to compose herself before speaking, trying to keep the tears out of her voice was not the easiest thing for her to do right now. "Did you get ahold of Brian?" she stated softly. Natalie slowly shook her head and started crying softly "He's not answering my calls...Ava, I yelled at him earlier about that stupid phone call between him and your dad and...well I think I may have pushed him away for good!" Natalie began sobbing again, fearing the worst for her daughter but Ava straightened her spine and dug her phone out of her purse. "Nat I'll be right back, I'm going to step outside and make a phone call...but if the doctor comes out, please for the love of god, come get me." She squeezed her best friend around the shoulders quickly before walking outside, her heels clicking loudly on the hospital tiles. Carefully dialing the number she held her breath and waited through one ring, two rings, three...
"Ava this is a surprise" Matt's cheery voice almost brought tears to Ava's eyes but she swallowed her regret and cut him off as nicely as she could.
"Where's Brian?" she stated, pacing up and down the sidewalk outside the ER. "Um, he's with me actually...why what's going on?" Matt's genuine concern touched her heart but she didn't have time to dwell on that right now.
"I need to talk to him...right now...please Matt." She could hear Matt mutter something softly before she heard the noise of the phone being passed over.
"Listen Ava if you're calling to ream me out for something I-" but again Ava cut into the conversation. "Get your ass to Florida right now Brian."
Brian was a little baffled at Ava's demanding tone with him, what all had Natalie told her that had her so defensive all of the sudden? "Listen I'm not trying to be rude here but I don't take kindly to being ordered around" he bit out, his eyes glaring at Matt as if this was some how Matt's doing...poor Matt stood there looking at him with such a bewildered look, he knew he was just being an ass now.
"It's Bryleigh" Ava stated, trying to keep her emotions out of the words she spoke.
Brian felt like someone suddenly sucker punched him in the gut. He flopped down onto the couch and gripped Matt's phone tightly. "What about her? Ava what's wrong?" Brian felt the seconds of silence span until he thought he would go mad. "AVA DAMMIT WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY DAUGHTER?!" He hadn't meant to yell but the bile rising in his throat was enough to make him insane right now if she didn't answer him soon.
"Her body rejected the transplant Brian...there's a possibility that she could...that she could" just like Natalie had been a few minutes ago, Ava now found herself unable to say the word 'die', instead letting a soft sob loose as she struggled to hold in her emotions.
Brian felt the blood drain from his body at the news, how had his robust little girl he barely knew suddenly decline so badly and so quickly? He cleared his throat and spoke carefully, working to keep his rarely shown emotions in check. "What happened Ava?"
Ava sighed in exacerbation, now was not the time for questions dammit! "Brian just get your ass to Florida right now...you can have all your questions answered when you get here but dammit move your ass! Your daughter's life depends on it!" and with that, she hung up and have herself a good little cry before she composed herself and went into Natalie.
Brian stared at Matt's phone after Ava hung up, tears slowly filling his eyes as he struggled to comprehend what had just happened. "Dude...what's wrong?" Matt asked cautiously from somewhere in front of him. Brian looked up at him slowly, his heart constricting at the worst possible thought. "I have to get to Florida...now...it's Bryleigh...she...she's...fuck!" Brian himself couldn't bring himself to say the words either, instead relied on Matt's intelligence to grasp what he couldn't say.
Recognition dawned on Matt's face a split second later, followed by an immense amount of worry for his best friend and Bryleigh. "Let's go dude...we're getting you to fucking Florida right now!" Brian nodded silently, feeling like the wind was knocked out of him as he quickly threw a bag together while Matt called the company they always used for private flights.
Matt turned to him once the flight had been arranged and hugged him fiercely. "Do you want me to come with you?" he asked hesitantly. Matt wasn't sure if it was his place or not to be going but he had to offer, knowing all too well how Brian dealt with crisis and tragedy if left alone for too long. Brian sniffed hard and shook his head "Please."
