Grandma told me that it was okay to be afraid and that the Lord said that we don't need to be afraid, we just need to take all our fears to Him. He will help us to solve our problems and take our fears away.
She taught me a short prayer to pray when I was scared or afraid of the dark or even if I was anxious about something: "Dear God help me to overcome my fears and help others to overcome their fears in order for us to better ourselves and praise Your Name, Amen."
Grandma's talk took a heavy burden from my shoulders, I felt if I could breathe again. When I was afraid of something I started praying and my fears slowly faded away.
Grandma surprised me with a torch the next day. "Keep this in front of your bed, it will make it easier for you in the dark." She said and smiled at me.
The next Sunday she took Redge and I to Sunday school and in time my bad dreams faded away.
Grandpa bought some vegetable seed and showed me how to prepare beds and plant the seed.
I was so excited when I saw the small plants emerging from the ground.
After a few weeks, we were able to sell our first packets of green beans. Grandpa gave me thirty percent of the profits and told me to save it for Christmas, I was so proud to see how my savings grow.
One weekend he took Redge and I fishing at a nearby dam. We had lots of fun. He showed me how to cast and I caught my first carb.
When the dreams stopped I was not that scared of my dad anymore, I was wondering if he ever went fishing and what he would do if I buy him a fishing rod for Christmas. After a lot of thinking I decided to buy my dad a fishing rod for Christmas.
I was anxious to see his reaction and watched him carefully while I gave him the rod. To my surprise, Dad was wiping tears from his eyes. It was the first time I saw his soft side and many awesome fishing trips followed. My dad and I had something to share, that was just awesome.
Years later my mother told me that Dad never knew his own dad. His father was killed on duty during a terrorist attack while he was in the army. "He did not know how to raise a boy." She said.
I am so glad my grandpa showed me how to be a boy. Far better I will always be grateful for grandma who showed me how to be a man. With God on my side and only a prayer away, I could conquer my greatest fears.
My wife and I raised a beautiful son and daughter together and tomorrow I am going fishing with my grandson Gregory.
