Layla laid back on the bed in the Alpha wing room she had been given a few days later. She rubbed the bracelet she now wore in place of ID. She hadn't thought much of it, when the pack stopped having ID cards and having bracelets, but reading up on the secret notes, she understood.
She had run into the Folicans a couple of times. Adam had refused to do any details beyond they were welcome visitors to the pack. He had refused to answer questions about them, and they had been fairly aloof unless one of the pack was talking to them..
There was a whole chapter on them in the e-reader she had. She was startled at how long they had been involved and how much they had shared. It was much more than the humans thought. She rubbed her wrist again.
She had a hard time believing the bracelet that looked like a leather braid with a metal plate which gripped her wrist comfortably tight was actually made of nanobots, and just was made to look like leather and metal. It had more strength than steel, so would resist being removed. From what she had read even if someone did, probably by removing the hand, it was DNA coded to her. It would be un-usable and would dissolve as designed upon removal or death.
Laying back on her bed against a stack of pillows and relaxing, she could feel the pack in the back of her mind, as if there was crowd standing beside her talking quietly. She couldn't hear voices, or tell what each was thinking, without pushing through their personal mental shields. She was glad Toms had taught her how to set mental shields, as she didn't want to be broadcasting thoughts to the others, even before she joined the pack. Now, if she wanted to talk to anyone, she just had to concentrate on them, and she could talk without having to leave her room.
Adam had worked with her to refine the control, and structure them so that she could feel the pack, but it wouldn't distract her. It made her feel better, as she could feel them, and thinking back, the feeling of welcome when she was introduced still worked wonders. It helped her deal with her distress from loosing her job.
Being able to feel the pack, she had been startled that there were faint links leading somewhere. She had talked to Brook, and after she finished laughing, had reassured her that she wasn't imagining it. She couldn't sense directions yet, but could feel a bundle that Brook had said was the sub-packs up farther north-west, and another southeast that was their parent pack, MacLaren.
She didn't need to look, but above her head, the pendent from the Pack Friend necklace had been suspended in the middle of a wooden circle using gold and white gold wires, with the matching earrings below it. There were wolf fur tufts from quite a few wolves woven into the ring. It made a beautiful dream catcher, and showed how much they cared, since she didn't want to think how much it was worth. Now that she was part of the pack she didn't need the pack friend necklace and this had been done for her. How special it had made her feel when it had been given to her.
It had been presented the day before by the pack's jeweller, as a welcome gift, along with her pack jewellery. That had touch her as much as them taking a handprint in resin, showing that while human, she was still able to leave a mark on the pack.
Len had told her to not worry about when she started working in the lab, as it wasn't a big deal. Adam had passed her a pack ID card and debit card. He had forwarded her a pack stipend, for the first month, and let her know if she needed more to hold her over till she was all moved in, to just talk to him. Tomorrow, she was heading back to pack up and finish off all the work she had open. About half what she had going had been reassigned already, and the rest would take a day or two. She had the back of her SUV full of flat boxes to pack everything up in, and when she called, they would send a large truck with some packmates to come get everything.
