Anjali
15 Years Later
My cellphone was ringing again. I'd ignored the first call but I had to answer the second one.
"Hello Jordan," I said sweetly.
"Hi sweetheart, how far away are you from the De Young museum?"
"I'm almost there," I lied.
"So you haven't left the house," Jordan said in his straightforward manner.
"I'm about to leave the house," I say as I pull on my shoes.
"Are you in the garage?" Jordan asks knowingly.
"I'm almost in the garage. I'll be there in ten minutes," I say as I grab my purse and car keys.
Jordan laughs, "Anjali sweetheart you will be here in thirty minutes. It will take you another five minutes to gather your things; another five to back out the car, ten minutes to drive to the park, five minutes to find parking and then the last five minutes you will be running in your heels up to the museum. You will then blame you're being late on the parking."
"Damn! How do you know me so well?"
"Because we've only been meeting weekly for coffee for I don't know forever. I've timed you from your garage and I know it takes exactly thirty minutes. So once you've parked call me and I'll order your latte. Got it?"
"Yes, I got it. See you in twenty!" I say sassily.
"Honey if you get here in twenty minutes I will hand over all of my stock shares in my latest investment."
"Bye Jordan, I have some shares to collect!" I say before slamming the phone shut.
I quickly run to my car determined to get there in less than thirty minutes. I run down to the garage and notice that that the sedan is parked behind the SUV and I of course have the keys to the SUV. I run upstairs to get the keys to the sedan. I don't have time to back the sedan out and then the SUV and then pull the sedan back in. I'll just take the sedan.
Damn now I will never get there on time.
I of course get every red light possible and every crosswalk has people walking on it. Eventually I make it to the Golden Gate park and right as I am pulling into a parking spot my cell phone rings.
"Are you here yet?" an impatient Jordan asks.
"I'm parking," I say as I finish a stellar job at parallel parking. I pull out my keys from the ignition and Jordan is still on the phone.
"Is there anything you want with your latte?" Jordan asks. He knows half of the time I'm running late and I just end up eating breakfast during our coffee date.
I give in, "Yes a chocolate croissant would be great."
"Do you want it heated?"
"Yes that would be great," I say as I run across the park in my heels.
"So you know our regular table is being occupied by some old couple so I found us a table on the outside patio. The weather is nice today so I thought we'd sit outside."
"That's fine with me," I say as I run up to the museum.
"You know you can get to the café from outside and that way you don't have to push down all of the tourists," Jordan says reminding me there is an outdoor entrance.
"Do you like have eyes out here spying on me?"
"Maybe. And one more thing, I'm wearing a red shirt and I'm in the back left corner if you come from the outside."
