"Mom, I'm home and I brought some company,'' Jane took off her boots and hung the coat. She peeked at the cute kitten that was still in the bag, "Are you ready to meet mom?" she smiled. The kitten gently flicked its tail. "It is a yes then"
Jane entered the living room, her mom was busy working on one of her wonderful logos. Yes, Jane's mom was a graphic designer. She spent most of her time browsing the web, working on Photoshop or even Illustrator.
"Mom, meet Tar,'' the kitten's tail was held high showing disapproval of the choice of its name while Jane's mom had wide eyes.
"Honey, you already know what I think about keeping a pet, remember what happened to Blue the bird,'' her mom said."Oh, mom! How many times do we have to discuss this topic, it was long time ago, besides it wasn't my fault that Blue wanted to be freed."
Jane's mom smiled, "You can keep Tar on one condition_" she began.
"Fine, whatever it is! It is my responsibility," she interrupted.
"Then, we have a deal! Go to your room and start with your homework, fifteen minutes and dinner will be ready," Jane's mom said never taking her eyes from her laptop.
She sighed and went upstairs to her bedroom that was her little haven. The bed was in the middle of the room and above the bed a large clock on the wall. A large window with white curtains that allowed her to have a view of her neighbor's garden. Jane sat on the chair, tapped with her pencil on the desk then started with her English assignment.
Dinner was served just as Jane's mom announced after fifteen minutes. Jane Smith spend most of her time eating alone or with her mom around but then again more silence. Her mom was always somewhere busy attending a conference or busy working on her laptop. Jane wasn't allowed to touch her mom's stuff, it meant trouble. One time, she was using her mom's laptop for getting some cool ideas about how to make a welcome back surprise for her mom, well her mom was indeed surprised, Jane unintentionally erased some vital data from the desktop, her mom was quiet more than usual, Jane was grounded for sure. Because of that, the young girl always attempted to reach perfection and to make her mom proud of her. Her mom was her only family since Jane lost her dad when she was just a baby. Her mother's silence was a symbol of resistance and sacrifice. She respected her mom for that, and she tried to support her even if it meant giving her some space, and even if it meant missing her all the time.
After dinner, Jane was solving the last equation when Tar started meowing, "What is wrong, Tar?" she questioned. But Tar snuggled his head under the pillow, Jane turned off the lights and closed her eyes.
It wasn't the first time for Jane to wake up in the middle of the night with an unexplained shortness of breath and a little bit of pain in her chest. However, this time Tar was the one to wake her up by nibbling her nose. "Tar, go back to sleep," she demanded but Tar's meowing escalated. She was obliged to remove the cover and to look straight at Tar then she rolled out of bed in order to follow Tar to the kitchen. Jane filled the empty bowl with food and Tar ate it without a single meow. Well, it is hard to make a voice with a mouthful of kibble. She went back to her bed and slept hoping for the pain to go away. After all, the next day she'll be getting the results of her blood tests.
The last thing she felt before drifting in deep slumber was hearing the flapping of two wings over her head.
