"She was almost too beautiful: as beautiful as a blush of summer sunset on a sky-wide stream of clouds."

"William, where did you go?" Jane fell on her knees with tears in her eyes.

He stooped down beside her, cupping her cheeks, "I'm so sorry, I heard you. Your voice was in my head. I don't know how is it possible. What happened? Jane, look at me. Why aren't you looking?"

"I can't see" Jane stuttered.

Blue, lavender eyes looked deep into Williams' shadowy face. She brought her hand closer to his face and repeated, "I can't see you, but I feel your presence. There's this weird energy radiating from you. I feel it." Her fingers moved from his cheek to his eyes. "Especially your eyes. Your fingers can do many things." She finished her last word and removed her finger, smiling weakly.

William was confounded. "Phoenix, where the hell are you?" He looked around and saw him sleeping heavily under a tree. He sighed heavily. He pressed two finger on his forehead and let several acorns fall on Phoenix who woke up startled and started cursing.

"Phoenix, you useless kitten. Stop wasting time," William shouted.

Phoenix was frustrated. He started flying with a hissing sound.

"Hey, back off." William warned.

Phoenix was ready for a combat with dilated pupils he argued, "You started it. Why did you wake me up as if you have an acorn in your throat?"

William glared at the furious kitten. The latter noticed that William was kneeling right next to Jane. The young girl was staring at the ground. Her hair was covering her face.

"What's wrong?" Phoenix inquired.

"Instead of sleeping, you should've stayed alert. Someone tried to attack Jane." William turned his attention to Jane. "I'll take care of you now. Everything will be fine," he said gently.

Phoenix watched his friend help Jane to stand up. He walked cautiously near her. He saw her look at his direction. She stopped walking, forcing William to stop along the way. The kitten stared at the color of her eyes. Those blue, turquoise eyes were enchanting him. William watched her, one of his hands was on her waist, trying to steady her. The other was holding her arm.

"Tar," she called.

Phoenix didn't like the nickname at first, but he got use to it.

He waited for her to finish her sentence.

"You shouldn't be frightened of what you have inside you." Jane muttered slowly. Phoenix stared at her with wide eyes.

"What's wrong with her?" Phoenix flew and reached William's height.

"Look at her. I left for less than ten minutes and this happened. She can't see now. We have to get help," William said exasperated.

"No," Jane objected.

"You're not arguing now," Phoenix said.

"Jane, you need help. You lost your sight." William shook her shoulders.

"Wait for dawn. I'll be fine. I think I'll be fine. I have this peculiar feeling inside me." Jane managed to say. She wanted to rest, sleep was on her mind.

"You think, Jane." He mimicked her words.

"I just need rest. Trust me." She pleaded.

William watched Jane remove his hands from her. He had a tight grip.

"Sorry. Okay, you have till dawn." He waved his hands in defeat.

Instantly, closing her eyelids, she started breathing deeply. William watched her as if his mind was blocked from all the troubles burdening him. Her brown hair was like a wave cascaded down her back like withering leaves in autumn days.

He couldn't sleep all night. He kept an eye on her waiting for dawn.

The dawn came with musical silence, the soul hearing the melody that the ears could not.

William moved closer to where Jane was breathing softly. He nudged her gently. "Jane, it's time to wake up," he said in a low voice.

Jane blinked a couple of times as her eyes adjusted. She saw William looking at her with a strangled expression. She gazed back at him. It was good to see him again, not merely a shadow.

William cleared his throat, "your eyes are back to normal."

Jane sighed in relief. She felt a surge of power while she possessed a different color of eyes. Too powerful for her liking. She said things she never understood.

William pulled her and heard Jane's stomach grumbling in protest. Jane glared at her stomach. "You're always embarrassing me." William laughed. "Let me feed you."

Phoenix joined them later on. There breakfast consisted of fruits, cornbread, and cheese.

"How did you manage to bring this food?" Jane was curious.

"There's a village near by. Yesterday, I left-" William remembered what happened. He was feeling guilty.

"I'm really sorry, Jane." He looked apologetic.

Jane remembered bits and pieces. She definitely remembered the guy though.

"It's okay. I'm fine now," she smiled.

William smiled back, still with a tinge of remorse glinting in his eyes.

"So, what do you exactly remember?" Phoenix asked.

"Hmm. I remember Tar sleeping and then there was this light. It was majestic, and I was about to touch it. Oh. The guy that attacked me, he stopped me, and he knows you  William." Jane said with a confusion drawn all over her face.

William had a matching face while Phoenix had a smug face.

"You looked at the light and you were blind. Right?" Phoenix questioned.

"Yes," Jane answered.

"And you said you were about to touch it. Right?"

"That's what I just said," she furrowed her eyebrows.

"What do you want to say?" William asked, voice Sonorous.

"That guy didn't want to hurt you. It's quite the contrary he helped you, Jane," he explained.

Jane looked puzzled. She wanted to ask him what he meant; it didn't make sense at all, but William beat her.

"Get to the point! What are you trying to say?"

The kitten sighed heavily. "Touching the light means becoming dust."
