James, William and Jane along with a sleeping Phoenix were all huddled in front of the fireplace in Grandma Sophia's living room. They were waiting for gran to return since she went to bring a book from the library.

William kept stealing glances at Jane who was lost in her own world. Jane was confused. She needed answers. She didn't know herself anymore. She had some weird attachment to this place as if she belonged to it. She looked at William who looking outside the window. His words were being repeated over and over in her mind. Why was she a quest that he was really eager to find more about her? She couldn't stop thinking. Her senses were getting stronger, and her body was different. Nothing seemed normal for her. After gran showed her the stone, she felt baffled and her confusion became deeper. A picture of a woman engraved in the stone, a woman who looked exactly like her.

Grandma Sophia entered the cozy living room, and ushered for them to move closer. She placed a huge grey book on the table. Jane was the first to move, followed by the rest. She was intrigued by this world and wanted to learn more.

"Before I open the book, you should remain quiet until the very end," Grandma Sophia ordered.

"Now since you all have agreed shall we start?" she smiled.

James had wide eyes. It was the first time he sees his granny in this situation. She was too eager to share one of her many gifts.

The old woman started mumbling incoherent words. Within flashes of seconds, the book started glowing weak at first and then it turned stronger. What looked like beige walls were soon forgotten and replaced by a bright constellation that radiated from the book and streamed to their faces! The light projected them into another time.

A woman in a green dress, slim with light brown hair, and big hazel eyes, was mounting a white horse, riding side saddling. She looked really elegant and royal, Jane thought.

"Lady Catharina, stop!" a deep voice howled from a far.

Wasting no time, the young lady was fleeing like a deer from its predator. She jumped over a fence, and Jane had the urge to cover her eyes. However, William's warm hand squeezed hers for reassurance. She could feel her body tingle.

The front legs hit the muddy ground before the hind legs. Lady Catharina had a victory smile but was soon removed when she heard a whistle. "Playing dirty again," she cursed. As a reaction to the immobility of the horse, she sprinted into a run. She bolted down like an athlete nearing finishing line. She picked a log and waited.

A man in his twenties was breathing steadily. He said to no one in particular, "she's born to run."

Dodging his head, he evaded the blow skillfully. He had it coming. He was a knight after all.

He couldn't hide his smirk when he looked at the serious face. She looked in a battle field. Holding her log, she glared at him. "Why did you come back? It had been months. Besides, I might get married, so you coming for a tour or what?" she narrowed her gaze at him still mad for disappearing.

"I see you've been practicing," he joked.

Swiftly, she stroked again and again until she was breathless. Her hand was shivering when he caught her only weapon. "You win." She surrendered.

"Cathy, you know you're a good fighter. Don't you think you're going too hard on yourself?" he moved closer, holding her hand. She looked at his warm hand. Oh, how she wanted it to stay in its right place, but she remembered it is impossible. It is forbidden to be together, and she doesn't want to hurt him. She doesn't want him to abandon his home and his family.

She yanked her hand. "Why are you doing this to me, Christopher? Why are you torturing me like that? Why did you come back? Stop calling me like that and holding my hand as if you care?" she was on the verge of crying, and she wanted to push him away. She walked away, not looking behind her.

His hand found her waist, bringing her closer. "But I do care, Cathy. You even know more than enough how much I care. I tried to forget you. It is hard." She looked in his blue eyes that spoke nothing but sincerity.

"Let me go," she begged.

"No!" He said with rage in his voice.

"I'm just a filthy human for your kind. You would be cursed if you stayed with me. Save yourself." She attempted to push his chest, but he held her hand firmly. "My heart beats only for you," he shouted out loud.

"Are you mad? Someone might hear you." She looked around.

"I'm mad alright. I'm mad about you, and I could care less about the consequences."

"But-"

He interrupted her by sealing her lips with an inevitable kiss.

...

William and James were bewildered. Everyone heard about the curse, but they didn't know that someone had been cursed before. Falling in love with a human was a sin. It was forbidden. The family would be cursed. They would have children who bring disgrace and shame to their lives.

Suddenly, a strong light took James, William and Jane to a different time, a different scene, the wedding scene. Lady Catharina was wearing a beautiful white dress, and Christopher placed the ring in her index finger. The ring shone as a reaction. She looked at Christopher with tears in her eyes.

"We have each other, love!" He kissed her temple.

Grandma Sophia looked at three distressed faces.

"Gran, has the curse been broken?" James was the first to break the silence.

"Yes dear," she answered.

"I don't get it. Where am I supposed to go in all of this?" Jane asked annoyance and confusion perfectly clear in her voice.

"I think I know the answer to your question." William stared into her eyes, taking her hand in his. Jane gulped nervously, waiting for him to continue.

"Lady Catharina is your ancestor," he averted his gaze to look at gran. "Though one thing I don't get it, if the curse was true, Jane would be a shame or a disgrace or even a monster, Right?" He speculated

"I've always believed you're a smart one, and you are correct. However, Catharina was a witch, and she made a spell. All the babies that were born were boys until Jane came, but it seems the curse doesn't work for her or something wrong with the curse.

"How is it possible?" she wanted to ask but the thought scared her. "Does this mean I'm a witch?"
