When Mei got home she went straight to her room only to be caught by Ai. 

Ai gasped and put her hands on her hips.  “Your highness! I cannot believe you went out without your disguise ”

“Ai please let's not forget who the princess is here, you can't judge me for going out like this. I am a woman and I want to wear pretty dresses and hairpins and jewelry, now please leave me I want to sleep” Mei said in a shaky voice, she was on the verge of crying and she hated crying.

Ai sighed, she pitied the young princess though she could begin to imagine what it must be like to have to walk around disguised as a man when she was a beautiful woman.

Mei sat at the edge of her bed and hugged her knees to her chest.
She missed him a lot and she wished that they'd never been separated.
She pulled the hairpin he'd given her out of her pocket.

the hairpin reminded her of how they met and the promise he'd made.
