Mei couldn't believe that the queen suggested that she become Jinheung's second wife. That was no better than being a concubine, which made her wonder who the first wife was. "If I may ask your majesty, who will the first wife be?" She asked

"Sook myung" the queen replied. 

Mei wasn't completely surprised, she knew that the queen was obsessed with the bone rank system and she wanted to keep the throne within their family.  She also knew that Jinheung would never agree to such a thing. 

There was only reason why the queen wanted Mei to marry her son, it was obviously to form an alliance with qing.
"With all due respect your majesty, I realize that you wish to form an alliance with qing through this marriage but I am not a girl from a powerful family, they are the ones that become second wives. I am a princess, my mother is a princess and my father is the Emperor I do not see the wisdom in becoming a second wife, that is no better than being a concubine your majesty" Mei said.

The queen was surprised at the way Mei spoke, "Do not misunderstand the marriage will be made official, you will be the second queen of this country" the queen said and stood up, "Please think about it, I've had a room prepared for you. The court maids will assist you if you need anything.  Good night princess " the queen said and left.

Mei followed the two court maids that had been assigned to her to the room the queen had prepared for her. It was spacious and beautifully decorated. " I'm expecting my personal maid to bring some things for me. When she arrives let her in" Mei said to the court maids and then she closed the doors.

A while later, Ai came into the room and she found Mei sitting on her bed staring at the ground.  She put the amended uniform on a table in a corner of the room, then she sat down next to the princess and touched her shoulder. 

Mei jumped and put a hand on her chest. "How can you sneak up on me like that!" She exclaimed. 

Ai shook her head and sighed "What are you thinking about?" She asked.

Mei smiled "Nothing, I'm just really tired" Mei didn't want to admit that she had given up on everything and was mentally preparing herself to leave. 

"Well, I've brought your uniform but I don't see the point of you going back to that place.  Everyone knows that you're a princess now"

"It doesn't make a difference Ai, I made a pledge and I have to honour my word" Mei said.

"So have you spoken to him yet?"

"No, I've been avoiding him actually because now that he finally knows. I have no idea what I'm going to say, what he's going to say" Mei said.

"Well it's not like he's going to kill you, if anything you should be angry with him for not figuring it out on his own. You owe him no explanation" Ai said. 

"I know that, still doesn't make it any easier.  I just need to sleep on it, thank you for bringing my uniform Ai.  Good night" Mei said and Ai left. Mei lay down and closed her eyes.

The next morning, Mei didn't feel like waking up early. She knew that she had told master we hwa to treat her as any other hwarang but she knew he'd have difficulty doing so. She lay in bed for another hour before she finally woke up.
