Aeron whined loudly in the basinet beside the bed. I heard him, but I couldn't force my aching body to cooperate with my mind. My mom knocked at the door and pushed it open. "Would you like me to get Aeron for you, Kayla?" I nodded, but did not look in their direction.
I heard her lift him out of the basinet. I heard his soft little pants as he calmed from his crying. She turned and headed toward the door and pulled it shut behind her.
I slowly sat up in the bed and pulled the blanket around my body more as I shivered. My body felt as if it was being pricked by a thousand pins and I groaned out miserably. I lowered my head against my knees and let the tears come. It had been three weeks since the night I had felt his wolf's rejection. I had no idea if he was in Redwood still or if he was back in Syros. I didn't feel him. But then again, I tried desperately not to. I saw him when I looked at Aeron and it made my heart break even more.
I sucked in a sharp breath and wiped my eyes as I looked up and saw Mark enter the room and Ben behind him. I stared briefly at Ben before I looked up at my dad. "Oh, Kayla. My heart aches to see you like this."
I blinked more tears and with a lot of effort I pushed myself up and out of the bed. I gritted my teeth through the pain that racked my body and turned to the window. "Any news from him, dad?"
"Did you think there would be, Kayla? He rejected you, dammit!" Ben stepped closer to me as he demanded my attention. I winced as I wrapped my arms around my stomach. "No. It wasn't...I mean it..."
Ben grabbed my shoulders and turned me into his arms. "I was too scared to be there for you before with Aiden. I refuse to be so cowardly this time." He tightened his embrace around me and I cried out from the pain that he was unintentionally creating.
"Enough!" My dad's command bellowed through the room and Ben instantly dropped his arms from around me and I fell onto the window sill behind me. "Now is not the time to force her into something like that, Ben." Ben turned and nodded. "Leave us." He nodded briefly and walked past him and out the door.
"I apologize, Kayla. I didn't realize he would be so forceful."
I nodded. "But you think I should..." The thought of entertaining the idea of being with someone other than Dante made me feel like I was going to stop breathing.
Mark shook his head. "Of course not." He stepped towards me. "I didn't tell Ben because I didn't think it was his business to know. Dante did send word of his whereabouts."
I snapped my head up towards him and stood, although I remained leaning against the wall beside the window. "Where is he?"
He ran his fingers through his hair just as Annaleigh entered again into the room with Aeron in her arms. He giggled delightedly when he saw me, but I only stared at him briefly. "Where is he?" I demanded my answer a little bit too sternly and Mark rose taller before he took a deep breath. "He returned to Syros as I expected."
A pain sliced through my heart and I cried out as I felt the strength that I did have leave from my body. Mark caught me just as I fell and he guided me back to the bed. He made sure that I was sitting on the bed before he turned and sat down himself. Annaleigh set Aeron down in his basinet and walked around to where I was. She placed her hand on my shoulder and looked at Mark. He nodded and she looked back at me again.
"If there is ever a thing I was sure of, it is the fact that you are strong enough to get over it or you are courageous enough to go fight for the Lord Alpha of Syros if he is who you desire." She glanced back at Mark. "The only thing I was ever sure of for myself was my love for Mark. If I ever questioned whether I could be a good Luna, he was there to guide me and make me feel as though I could." She paused and Mark stood and rested his hand on my shoulder before he turned and exited the room.
