Chapter 4

Monday morning, I was already enrolled at St. James High School. I put on a purple shirt and a pair of jeans then I pulled a brush through my brown hair. I went to the mirror. I looked at my hair and my brown eyes, picking up eyeliner, I decided to put some on. When I got downstairs, I could smell pancakes and syrup. I sat at my place and shoveled one on my plate. I started eating when my mom entered the room. She was wearing a blue sweater dress with a black belt and high heeled boots. Her hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail. She smiled down at me.

“Are you excited for your first day of school?” Just hearing the words made my stomach sick. I was beyond nervous.

“Do I have to go?” I asked hoping I could be home schooled.

“Yes, you have to get an education.” With that we got into the car and went to school. My Mom was going to a job interview, working at the bank as a Teller. I was dropped off the main office. I walked in the lady at the desk smiled at me.

“The principle is waiting for you. Welcome to our school, Vivian Donaldson.” I smiled with brief hello, I walked into the office.

“You must be Vivian. Come right in.” The principle welcomed me with a smile. He was a tall man with sandy blonde hair and bright green eyes. He looked about 40 or older.

“My name is Mr. Todd Saltzman. I’m the principle at St. James. I look forward to the year ahead of us.” He smiled again.

He continued. “I see your grades at you old school were quite impressive. But here is a little different so I’m going to do what I do with all students. Assign you a tutor.” I stared at him. A tutor, is that really needed?

“Why do I need a tutor?” I asked hoping to change his mind.

“Vivian, don’t take offense to this. We do this with all new students. Come here after school. I’ll introduce you to your tutor. His name is Kendall Sparks.” I left him in his office and went to class. My first period was Chemistry with Mrs. Woodsmen. When I walked into class, all eyes were on me.

Mrs. Woodsmen was the first to speak. “Hello, you must be Vivian, I’m Mrs. Woodsmen. Welcome to Chemistry.” She smiled. Mrs. Woodsmen was a short woman with long black hair and hazel eyes. She looked around 30. “Class, this is Vivian Donaldson. She’ll be joining us. Please, take you seat.” I walked to the middle of the desks sat down next to a girl with bright-red hair and green eyes. She gave me a small smile. “Hi, I’m Diana.” I looked at her heart-shaped face. “Hey, how long have you gone here?”

“About 7 years.” She replied. Mrs. Woodsmen started teaching.  A few minutes later a note appeared on my desk. Sit by me at lunch.-D.I looked up at her, but she turned away listening to Mrs. Woodsmen.

Next class was band. I walked onto the room with my clarinet case in hand. Mr. Huntson introduced me and picked my spot as a second clarinet. After that, class went by fast, soon it was 3:00 and I went to the main office. I sat in my chair and watched the clock.

I waited for Kendall Sparks.
