Donna sat bored, listening to her mother ramble on about how Donna should have called her more, or written letters, or... sent pigeons? Donna wasn't really paying attention. Instead she wrapped strands of her vibrant red hair around her finger.
"It's terrible what happened to those students. Absolutely terrible. We were so worried it was going to be you we read about next. Didn't bother to call us did you though? Didn't think about me for a moment did you?" She sighed deeply.
"I did think about you, I just... Didn't have anything to tell you." Donna replied, letting her hair unravel from her finger and fall away.
"Yes well a simple "hello" would have been fine." She grumbled. "Did you not meet anyone? No friends? Boyfriends?" She questioned.
"No boyfriends mum, I don't need one."
"Of course you do." She threw her hands up dramatically then started pacing explaining why her daughter should get a boyfriend.
They were both in the kitchen, it was relatively small with black and white floor tiles. The brown cabinets lined the room along with the kitchen essentials. Donna sat at an oak brown table with matching chairs, a warm cup of tea in front of her. It had been two days since Donna had come home from school, her Granddad had left a while ago and so the red head was left with alone with her mum.
"Fine then, do you at least have friends." Her mother, Sylvia, huffed after finishing her rant.
"Yes I do, thank you." Donna replied and took a sip of tea.
Sylvia stood opposite Donna on the other side of the table, one hand on her hips, the other on the table. "Well, what are they like?" She demanded.
"They're... nice." She took another sip of her tea.
"What are their names? What are they like? What do you talk about? Boys?" Sylvia pestered. Donna gave her a look at the end of it and set her tea down, folding her arms on the table and looking up at her mother.
"Well, one of them is called Sherlock-"
"Sherlock?"
"Yes Sherlock and he's very smart." Her mum rolled her eyes. "Then there's John, he wants to be a doctor. And David but we all call him The Doctor for some reason, I think I'm closest with him. Er, there's Sam and Dean, they're brothers. And then there's Castiel and Gabriel, they're also brothers." She finished "Oh, and there's Kim, my roommate, she's sweet."
"Well I-"
"Where's Granddad."
Sylvia sighed heavily and walked back to the counter. "Up the hill, he's always up the hill!" She complained and grabbed a large flask. "Here, he left his flask, go give it to him."
...
Donna walked away from the pale yellow glows of the street lamps lining the darkness and began walking up the hill, hugging the flask close to her as she did so. She wore a large fluffy coat due to the freezing temperature. When she finally reached the top she saw an old man sitting beside a telescope on a tartan blanket. He had a soft red hat pulled over his head and a large black coat.
"Hey Granddad." Donna called. The man turned around smiling
"Donna!" Her Granddad greeted smiling.
"I bought you something." She smiled handing him the flask.
"Oh aren't you an angel." He said taking the flask off her. Donna sat next to him on the blanket and looked up at the sky while her granddad poured the tea into the lid of the flask. The sky was a dark navy littered in grey clouds suppressing the glittering silver that should dot the sky. An occasional star could be seen through the thick shrouds but it was mainly just a fusion of greys and blues and black. It wasn't a good night for stargazing, but never the less, her granddad remained in the same spot he's always in, looking up at the sky. Because in the sky, he sees the same thing he saw when he was a child; hope. Hope that he'll get to watch history unfold, that he'll be able to see a change in the world, a change for the better.
