The Doctor slowly pushed his door open and was wrapped in the light of the dying sun, which seeped in through his window, warming his body. He stepped through and looked around the room he never thought he'd miss. And although he didn't miss it when he was away, now, as he glanced around the sun lit room, something warmed in his heart; something just felt right. It wasn't the feeling of being home; he knew where his home was. It was more the feeling of perpetual welcome, somewhere that accepted him. The Doctor wasn't sure if it was the school itself or perhaps his room; his room where he could talk with Jack, mess around with Donna or just concentrate. His room. He smiled at the thought.
"Doctor!" Jack called after noticing his roommate slip in.
"Oh Jackaboy!" The Doctor exclaimed back, dropping his suitcase handle and engulfing the smaller boy in a large hug. They laughed slightly at each other and pulled away, but kept hold of the other's arms.
"How was your Christmas? And your family?" Jack asked, grinning from ear to ear.
"It was amazing! Absolutely amazing! They're all good, better than good, great. What about you, how was your Christmas?" The Doctor beamed, while letting go of the other's arms.
"It was good. Really good." Jack's smile was almost distant, like looking back on a long forgotten memory that only now was beginning to surface.
"Come on Jack! Just good?" The Doctor edged, sitting on his bed. Jack smiled and shook his head, sitting on his own bed, facing The Doctor.
"It wasn't much; it wasn't like spending time with my family or going to a massive party... Maybe it was better than that... It was just Mark and me most of the time, Felix found this girl who got stuck here too, didn't see much of him after that." Jack smiled brightly, thinking on the adorable couple. "But, yeah, we just hung out, talked, played video games. Even called Bob and Wade at one point, Aaron wouldn't pick up though. It was really fun." Jack and The Doctor shared a smile, a bright, content, contagious smile, at nothing in particular, just each other's happiness. Suddenly, something startled the smaller's thoughts, his crystal blue eyes lit up like fiery stars as his smile morphed to a smirk.
"Have you spoken to the Winchester's yet?" The memory of something big, was pulling at his mind. The Doctor shook his head.
"What happened?" He grinned leaning in.
"I'm pretty sure it was them at least. It was quite late on Christmas day, Mark was here, we were just talking. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, this massive boom comes from outside. Scared the sh1t out of me. I turned to look outside and practically the whole sky by the field is filled with fireworks! It was so loud and bright but really impressive. Look I recorded it." Jack spoke, before turning to grab his phone from the bedside table. By this point, The Doctor's grin was massive, splitting across his face, pure delight.
However, as Jack grabbed his phone, there was a knock at the door. It wasn't an ominous knock, it was a normal knock. Just four simple sounds, could be anyone from either's friendship group. So why did it strike such a chord? Why did The Doctor's smile drop completely? Why did Jack's head snap up to look at his roommate in fear? Why did they hesitate before opening the door? Why did everything suddenly feel so...bad?
The neon haired boy slipped his phone in his pocket, and crept towards the door, the taller boy close at his heels. His hand falling on the cold metal handle, slowly he pulled it open.
Neither was sure of what they expected, but it wasn't what they saw. Life was continuing on as normal beyond the doorway, people hugging, talking, and strolling back to their rooms. There were a lot of people there as now was the day most people were getting back. There still wasn't as many students as the beginning of term, several people dropped out due to the accidents, but a large majority still remained. In the doorway, a boy only just taller than Jack with now black hair stood, tears streaking his cheeks. Mark.
