As the final hour of the final lesson before the Christmas holidays dragged on tediously, Sam wasn't sure if he was relieved for all this to be over or anxious about what could happen in their break.
Sam and Dean had planned to stay at the school, considering their dad wasn't going to make it home and either way, Christmas wasn't something they really celebrate. Dad was never home for Christmas; Dean would try his best to cheer Sam up, once he even stole presents for him, but the holiday just served as a reminder of how their mother's death had corrupted their father's mind and how alone they felt. How isolated they felt. Always forced to move around for their dad, the only people they could ever trust, could ever count on, were each other and Bobby. Bobby practically acted as their father figure, he was the one that cared about them, and although he couldn't always be there, they both knew he at least wanted to be. That was enough.
The obnoxious ringing screeched over the noise of the class. Cheers rang out and the stampede began. Some people, such as Sam, stayed where they were and waited for the outburst to subside or to say goodbye to friends. Among those who stayed back was the small, black haired, Kevin, Sam's friend. He walked over to Sam and stood next to him, neither said anything but instead watched as people pushed and shoved to get out of the class room. Eventually it calmed down so the two began to walk out.
Outside the room lay a swarm of people yelling and laughing and just basically creating havoc. Within the midst of this chaos Sam noticed the very small golden haired boy standing towards the back of the hallway decorating someone with tinsel. They did not look very pleased.
Kevin noticed Sam's gaze and smiled. However Kevin did actually want to leave without tinsel in his hair so he wished Sam a good Christmas and disappeared into the crowd. Sam made his way over to the trickster, who had now found someone else to decorate.
Just as Gabriel looked over at Sam and smiled, Sam felt something grab at his wrist. He turned to see a very pretty blonde girl who he recognized to be Jessica from a couple of his classes.
"Hey um, Sam..." She started.
"Yeah Jess?" He smiled.
She shook her head nervously before looking at him, she handed him a piece of paper while smiling sweetly. "My number."
"Oh, uh, yeah, I'll, I'll text you later." She smiled, pleased with the response.
"Merry Christmas Sam!" She said before throwing her arms around his shoulders and hugging him tightly. Sam laughed and returned the hug.
"Merry Christmas Jess."
Before she pulled away she placed a quick kiss on his cheek then ran off into the dissipating sea of faces.
"Looks like Sammy's had a good term. Enjoy that early Christmas present?" Gabriel jeered from behind him. He stood smirking with his arms crossed, however Sam didn't notice the hint of jealousy and sadness masked by his usual attitude.
Sam turned, blushing slightly. "Shut up Gabriel. And it's Sam." He tried to correct him.
"What? Why? She was very pretty. I'm sure-"
"Why were you putting tinsel on random people?" Sam interrupted.
"Because it's Christmas Sammy!" He called before wrapping the decorative material (that somehow appeared from nowhere, let's not question it) around Sam's neck. Then made him a crown from it. Then covered his arms with it. All while they walked back to their dorms. Sam had just given up by this point.
