Đề bài: In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

My essay:

It is true that nowadays in certain nations, youngsters tend to take a one-year break between finishing upper-secondary schools and entering tertiary education in order to work or study. This trend has both benefits and drawbacks, as will be discussed below.

It is clear that doing pre-university jobs and travelling before going to college can be beneficiary to students. This would act as a catalyst for youngsters' process of gaining general knowledge and experiences. While going on a journey to many areas in the world can broaden young people's knowledge about various cultures, lifestyles and languages, working is a fantastic way to gain cooperative and group-working skills. This can give them a considerable advantage in terms of entering colleges and coping with every challenge of student life. Vietnam perfectly exemplifies this fact. Thousands of Vietnamese students opt to spend one year after graduating from high school doing volunteer work and travelling to many parts of the country to gain more knowledge and social skills, and thus they are more likely to win a scholarship from the university they desire.

However, the aforementioned trend also put youngsters at distinct disadvantages. After one year without studying, young people would have difficulty adapting to the academic environment with projects and assignments. This may adversely affect their academic performance at colleges. Moreover, travelling and working when they are immature can pose risks of accidents and harmful habits to the students. Lacking strict supervision given by parents and teachers in this one-year break, these youngsters can easily associate with ill-mannered peers and be launched on a path of wrongful acts such as drug abuse or violence.

In conclusion, while the action of taking a year off school between upper-secondary and tertiary education has both merits and demerits, I believe that students should not squander this chance to improve themselves comprehensively.
