My essay:

The line graph illustrates the changing patterns in the proportions and amounts of waste being recycled nationally in America over the course of 41 years starting in 1960.

Looking at the graph, it is immediately obvious that the percentages and total weights of recycled garbage both saw a considerable increase. The aggregate amounts of garbage showed a more dramatic rise in comparison with its proportions.

In 1960, 5.6 tons of waste were recycled throughout the USA. This figure nearly tripled to about 16.7 tons in the next 25 years. A similar trend was witnessed in the rates of American waste material being recycled, which dwindled from 6.4% to 6.2% prior to gradually climbing to just over 10% in 1985.

During the next period studied in the graph, the amounts of recycled garbage in the U.S. continued to rise in a dramatic speed. Its figures experienced an exponential increase from about 17% to shy of 56% in 10 years before rising more slowly to 86.9% in 2011. An upward trend to a lesser extent was exhibited in the percentages of American waste being recycled, which saw a rise of 24.7% between 1960 and 2011.
