My essay:
It is widely believed that the government should occupy the leading role in undertaking and controlling scientific research in lieu of private firms. While this is valid to a certain extent, I contend that the importance of corporations in this field should not be underestimated and diminished.
The notion that scientific research should be controlled and carried out by the government is largely justifiable. The key rationale in favor of this view is that this policy can help avoid the use of research in criminal activities. Private companies often overplay profit when conducting research, which can lead to ethic noncompliance the use of studies in illegal activities. Therefore, this wrongful act can inflict enormous damage and pose a great threat to the national security. By contrast, the government have stricter supervision for researchers, forcing them to observe laws, and thus may minimize the risk of crime. For example, should research into biochemical weapons be undertaken by private corporations, they may be sold to terrorists and extremist groups, which can be a menace to society. This would not happen if the states work on research studies with proper control and rules.
However, I believe that private companies should be the key factor in carrying out research into science. The reason behind this view is the great monetary power that firms, most notably behemoths, have. While the states have a large number of other priorities and therefore cannot allocate the needed amount of funding to scientific research, companies are able to receive huge investment from the wealth. These investment can act as a catalyst for the achievement and desiring results of the research being carried out. This effect can even be fortified with the monitoring and supervision from the government. By this end, strict laws should be enacted with severe punishments for noncompliance, which is likely to curb the misuse of inventions and studies.
In conclusion, while there are reasons to advocate the notion that scientific researched should be mainly performed by the government rather than private firms, I would argue that entitling corporations to conduct studies is a more viable measure.
